| Is there anything wrong with the brushed aluminum silver of the Buchla? Nah. It's bootiful. |

Well, people are entitled to their opinions. It doesn't mean you have to agree with them. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Functionality vs. Color. I would go for functionality.
Some color examples
White: Modcan, Digisound
Black: MOTM, Synthesizers.com, Moog, Blacet, Oakley
Aluminum: Doepfer, Plan B, Serge, Buchla, ARP, E-mu, Livewire
Blue: Wiard300

| As long as there is a good contrast between the text and background, I don't think the color makes much of a difference, as long as the finish is not to shiny, but I'm not to fond of the textured finishes, such as what MOTM uses, they remind me of the inside of a car trunk. |

Exactly ! It is well known that red pills work better and that red synths and red guitars sound better _________________ Jan

Hello.
I think that the beauty is also very important.
It's obvious that the colour will not make that a module sounds better. But it will make that you feel better when you start to work with your synthesizer.
Also remember the Vitruvius trilogy: Firmitas, Utilitas and Venustas. All three are = important.
I don't like the black modules. zero. I think is too sad.
I think that Ivory would be more elegant.
But look at Roman Sowa modular. Absolutely cheerful. I see it and automatic I smile. It' s beautiful.

The purple dotcom is know as the "Barney Synth", and it's owned by my friend John in NYC. It's actually two portable cabinets... and that photo doesn't really do it justice.
I've always wanted to rebuild my modular panels out of plexi/acrylic, reverse-engrave from the inside, after painting the rear black... then paint-fill the engraved ticmarks, text, and graphics... then install lighting inside the cabinets (neon, LED's, or whatever).
Having been in the sign and engraving industry, I know what's possible, and how F-in' good it would look. But- it would be a massive project.

I tried doing something similar when I first made my Soundlab. It's the "reverse engrave" part which is a killer. Just way too hard for someone like me whose engraving experience is like,...none. Doing it with a CNC router set to about 1mm deep would be awesome, but I don't have one, so, for now I'm going to keep perfecting my coloured wood laminate and Lazertran finish.
My first MPS is looking like it's gonna set a new standard, (for me at least). _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |
