I find this concept to be fascinating.

It looks to be to be a dedicated softsynth in hardware. The specs are to me impressive too. Let's see if they actually release it soon...

That said, imagine a Clavia G2ish synth with a 19 inch LDC display and an embedded computer running the editor app.

I don't get it. The filters from the CS80 weren't all that great- they were only 12db/octave. The real trick was the mixing of a great keyboard interface, two synth layers in one and the all important sine-wave oscillator to get the bass end.

Re the CS 80. Personally I think it was kinda the sum of it all that made the CS 80 great. I don´t think that each individual feature/circuit kinda stood out. It was having all this in one hugely impressive package that made it interesting. Still, it was also about these things were new, state of the art, expensive and on record covers and all that. No wonder the classic 70s synth monsters became iconic. Anyways, I think the CS 80 was good. I have the Arturia softsynth version. I use it now and then for certain CS 80 sounds, but frankly I don´t miss the heavy messy unstable monster.

yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I'm wondering if they'll do a rack mount, though, as I hardly would need another keyboard.

I'm also guessing this will cost more than a G2.

My impression of the Origin design so far ( without having actually seen or used one.)

Clearly the marketing is hyping the greatness of the old gear. The old gear is however far from bad. I think the Origin is quite possibly capabe of making some excellent sounds, but I really wonder if the selling point of the Origin will be great vintage sounding presets rather than the patchability of the system. For pro players who have been dragging along a huge vintage kit, an Origin keyboard or two will be far more convienient. Basically a large part of the market for the Origin will be the same guys who have been buying the Clavia Electro/Stage and Nord Lead.

I don´t think the vintage emulation hype makes the Origin bad. It´s a nice product which has already become iconic of sorts. The weird thing is however that the Nord Modular product series has kinda been offering many of the same features + probably a lot more... for years.

Yes... and no.. or...

A revamped G2 with an embedded computer + vga/dvi output + usb keyboard/mouse connectors . and produced in China ....

Imagine this thing looking like a mix of one of the existing G2 products and the CME Midi keyboard thingies Laughing

If scaled for selling in silly numbers this could have become a killer product and couild have been reasonably inexpensive too. Clavia could have sold it as a closed and finished system.. suggesting that there would only be bug fixes and no OS upgrades.

But would there be a market for such a product? Shocked Probably not.
..unless they added a fake tube warming circuit to it..

I'm glad to see all these emulations happening. Korg seems particularly good at maintaining the older gear through newer equipment (ie- Oasys). There was (IS) a time when products just weren't built to have a 250year life span. So those older products WILL die eventually. And the companies that first built them are largely non-existent. Resurrecting them keeps those sounds available. Touting the classics as great, is just one way of letting everyone know you went through the resurrection effort.

Good point. I have written a lot of music for specific instruments. Basically I was seriously fucked until affordable and good clones started to show on the market. I really hope the Creamware ASB line will be resurrected.

I am looking at a lot of money to pay for having the 2600 reconditioned. Much more than its original cost, in fact. Having good emulations does help, but only if they are reasonably accurate. I find a lot of the soft synths aren't as accurate (they're a lot cleaner, for instance), and I like that old fuzzy stuff, it's part of the sound. And mind you I now have a lot of new analogues too, and they don't have the same sound... So I dunno, I am still fascinated by the concept of the virtual dedicated soft synth emulation library.

Regardig the asb sound boxes. I'm sure they will soon live again! and more then that, they will expand! creamware was recently bought by soniccore.com they are not saying alot right now, but it seems that they have alot of cool things in store for us ( no pun untended:)
