The Technos Acxel had the coolest interface of any synth, ever. Cooler than the Fairlight light pen or the ballbearing switches of a Latronic Notron, possibly even cooler than the wall of knobs on an old Moog Modular.
They have listed a price now. I think it is approx. some 60 000 SKR - approx. 6500 euro.
So, I won´t be buying that one after all. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"
I had heard of them, but thought they where just a prototype unit, I didn't think they actually manufactured any, plus I don't think any made it to this side of the pond. Do you know if they ever produced the Technos 16 keyboard ? it looked pretty good at the time.
IIRC, around 30 Axcels were made. The 16PI was never produced. There use to be a technical rundown on the Axcel floating around the net, but I can't find it anymore. Here's a picture of the 16PI instead:

I remember reading about the original when it came out, but I honestly did not understand anything about how it worked. I am still not sure I do, except it is resynthesis, it was a neat trick back in the late 80s.
The new one looks more likely to be useful and probably a bit cheaper. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Acxel II Subject description: Acxel II PCI and PC
Hi,
In fact the PCI card will be updated for PCIe with MAC-OS support. The system, currently works on base PCI and Windows software but will be updated within months.
Roughly:
- PCI windows : 4 - 6 months
- PCI e MAC : 6 - 8 months
- SAS - Stand alone : 8 - 12 months

Acxel and 16Pi Subject description: Precisions
About the 16PI,
We (Technos) built 4 units (1 delivered to distributor but later recovered). Unfortunately only 2 Rackmount unit remain but no Console.
The Acxel
35 unit sold. I still support service for this unit but after 20 years, spare parts are impossible to get. For example if problem happens on Synthesis card this can be really difficult to repair in some cases.
The Acxel II
No compromize, it supports ALL Acxel functions, including the Graphic console (an option available in about 10 - 12 months). But much more open, Signal processing will be present into the structure, I mean that external instrument can control any part of Acxel sound (or element), for example. More details on www.idarca-audio.com website.

amazing
I remember this thing from the AES show in I think '89 -- I had no idea they ever built any. I thought it was a pretty cool concept though. _________________ www.soundsandeffects.com/forums.html

AES Subject description: AES
Hello
If my memory is good we presented the Acxel in AES NY in 1989... and at the Frankfurt Messe also in 89
The first time we presented the 16PI version 1 (Console + Big wooden 5 feet long case) was in 1985 in New Orleans. The 16PI version 2 (Console + Rackmount) was never presented as we moved to the Acxel development in 1987.
... we getting old
The Acxel II is much smaller and on top of it wide open unit that will support many synthesis modes - Axcelink, Additive, Analog (VCO, VCF, VCA, filters, etc.) are just beginning. We plan 2 type of console this year: robust Acxel 1 alike with Led matrix, and a LCD touch screen.

Hi Terryg
Exactly, Clive made demos with Nil Parent. BTW I still have contact with Clive and other Acxelmen, some of them actually help me a lot for some detailed definitions and propose improvements, new UI concepts to extend the Acxel II open approach, other ideas, etc...
Not sure but I think that the earthquake happened during the AES fair in 10/89
About your question, on Acxel II pricing, I am not sure that the administrator of this blog would appreciate that I send pricelists and use this blog for selling products. Please contact me directly for this type of question at info@idarca-audio.com, we will be glad to send you this information.
The reason of my come to this blog is to have exchanges with synthesiser fanatics, as a fanatic I consider myself on sound structure manipulations, processors and audio physics. Exchange ideas and friendly discuss.

The hidden Axcel
Yes, I went to that shop and tried to get it demonstrated for me, but it didn´t work properly. The demonstrator could´nt get any sound out of it, but at least I derived the pleasure from form some waves on the touch screen with my fingers
