Nord Wave vs. Nord Lead 2 (sound) |
|
|
I had a chance to try out a Nord Wave a few weeks ago and was pretty impressed. Unsurprisingly I spent the majority of the time exploring the sample-based synthesis, and didn't poke around much with the more traditional virtual subtractive synthesis.
How does the Wave compare to the Lead 2x when using it, essentially, as a Nord Lead, with traditional analog waveforms, etc.? (I don't own a Nord Lead 2 but like the sound of it quite a bit). If you get a Nord Wave are you getting every bit of the goodness of the Lead 2 sound, or are you losing a bit of the mojo there?
(Obviously this is directed at those who've owned both keyboards or have spent considerable time with them in some manner). |

You can't compare the Wave's 'normal' synth part with the NordLead 2X, e.g. the Wave has much more routing possibilities then the NL2X. The Wave is more like the NL3. The sound is much more defined as the NL2. Why don't you download the Manual from www.clavia.se?

Wout,
I understand that the Wave has a lot more to offer according to its schematics than the Lead 2X. However, many people think, for example, that the Lead2 sounds better than the Lead3, despite its limitations. It is in those terms, of the pure sound quality, when reducing the possibilities to a very simple patch, say a Saw-wave bass part, that I ask for opinions. I've already downloaded and read part of the manual, but of course it can't answer a question about how the synth actually sounds. (Thanks for the link anyway).
What did you mean by "the sound is much more defined as the NL2"? |

Hi,
I played the 2X for some years and changed it for the Wave.
The Wave has real nice instrument samples to play right from the start. The fun is you can finally mix these normal sounds with the synth waves which give you totally different soundscapes.
Sometimes you just want to play a organ or a piece of violin in a number without anything else, and when you want to make it experimental you just start turning the knobs.
I think the wave has more possibilities |

In a way I think you only can answer the question yourself by playing both synths in the shop or at a friends studio... There are users who say the NordLead(1) sounds much more raw then the NordLead2
So, why souldn't we build up a small library of a simple sound? And publish it on e-m.com?
What would be the best test?

The question is about the normal wave forms (like Saw) of the Wave. Are these about the same as on the NordLead2X or not? Just because it is a very subjective matter, words are not the right instruments to make the discussion, so I suggested sound samples.
Wout
I don't own a Wave nor a NL2X. I can do the NL1, NL2, NL3, NM Cl and NM G2. |

Here are some try-out files about the NL, NL2 and NL3
Just a single Saw wave (Mix to the left), a LPF and Amp, both with the same ADSR values.
I recorded a little bass line and a chord progression (well, progression
First three bass lines...

Wout,
Thanks for taking the time to produce all those files!
The one that is most interesting to me (because it is the most simple and straightforward) is the bass part, without unison. On the bass ones, though, it sounds to me like the filter is progressively closed down from the Lead to the Lead 2 to the Lead 3.
If you feel like it, how about posting another sample each of the 2 and the 3 bass part, but try to open the filter up more to get more sizzle like the Lead example. |

I used the parameter value to set the LPF and ADSR's. In MHO it shows some differences in designs. So I will re-record the files and open the Filters by using my ears.

great to hear the 3 nl synths next to eachother, the nl1 has the most raw edge i presume.... |

"words are not the right instruments to make the discussion"
Hi Wout,
I am not a techie but more a musician so I it's fore me more a feeling of describing a sound.
Sorry I use words for that
The Wave has more to offer in the total music pallet in my opinion.
Afcourse it also depents on what style of music you like. |

Or something else, so I will make those other ones again... I don't have a Wave yet. (Just waiting until those boys will make a rack version! Thomas!!!!)

It sounded to me, like with all the NL 2 sounds you posted, the filter was drastically different.
They all sound good to me, but maybe adjust the filter on the nord 2 so they all sound pretty similar. It seemed like th filter let a lot of stuff go through, compared to the 1 and 3. |

At the moment a little to busy with the NL2...

Sorry to bring this thread back but geez Wout it seems as though you unlocked the secret behind the Nord Lead 2's sound!! Nords are like owning BMW's, they are all nice they just have different characteristics.
From these sound examples you can clearly hear that the Nord Lead 2 is a wonderful sounding instrument! I just bought one so I am really excited - I had to get a little of that "vintage" vibe _________________ Studio A: Allen&Heath ZED R16 · Yamaha MSP 7's · EMU XL-1 TURBO · Nord Lead 2 w/expansion · Access Virus TI2 61 key · AppleMacBookPro 15.4" · PC w/intel q6600@3.2ghz · GTX 280 · 8gb DDR2 · Windows XP sp3 · Native Instruments Maschine · MPC 2000xl · Ableton 8/Sonar 8/Reason 4.0/FruityLoops 9/Waves Bundles/Logic 9/Phaedra/Komplete 6 *Wanted* Elektron MachineDrum SPS-1 MKII · MiniMoog Voyager Rack |

I just bought an Alesis USB Mixer and Cubase came bundled with it. But Cubase looks a tad complicated to setup.
Did you just record live AUDIO from you keyboard through your free crap software or were you using midi? _________________ Regards

I believe it was a long time ago...
Listening to it it's surely no Midi.
(Hold is different every time)
Recorded in Sound Forge and converted in a 22.1 kHz format mp3.
Sorry for that...
