Hello everyone,

This is my first of many posts, I'm sure. I'm new to the world of synths so still have a lot to learn.

Prior to buying the Nord Wave, I've only ever owned a Roland Juno-G, which, I'm afraid to say I never quite figured out and ended up using only the presets ('shame on you!' haha). In my humble opinion though, I didn't find the Juno's interface very user-friendly.

The NordWave's control panel on the other hand, is laid out very well. Each setting/effect is there in front of you and there's no need to trawl through countless pages of menus on the LCD to change something.

Anyhoo, it's question time. During our live show, I use several patches and often need to flick between them quite quickly mid-song. This was easily done on the Juno, as you could sort them into banks and then each patch would have a number in that bank that corresponds to a button, and so on.

Does anyone know if there a way achieve this on the Wave, or am I just gonna have to rename/edit the patches and change the order of how they appear in the list to suit the order of our set?

I don't really wanna be scrolling through the bank all the way through our performance that's all! Crying or Very sad

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated guys.

Cheers!

BTW - As you will have gathered by now, I'm just starting out, so if anyone has any helpful tutorials which may make the penny drop then please pass them on Very Happy

welcome minds_eye

I don't own a Wave, but I'm sure in the Manager you are able to create banks, save to a computer and upload them to the synth. All you need is a playlist before the show starts Smile Create also a 'overall' useable bank.

Hello minds_eye,

There are a lot of free banks for the user.
You can create your own sounds and put them in one of the free banks
and give them your own number
For example my 20 favourite sounds I created are put in Bank 4
patch 1-20

So it's easy Smile

Cheers for the replies fellas!

Ruud, sorry to be a pest but I've been playing with the manager software and can't work out how to transfer sampled instruments to the banks. Or do I have to create a new program first?

You'll have to excuse my ignorance (or is that impatience?)..

Cheers! Smile

Instruments are not stored in banks. Patches are stored in banks. You can make a patch that uses an Instrument, but the Instruments themselves are, essentially, oscillators (albeit very complex ones) that are stored in a separate location and accessed via the OSC 2 knob.

It's quite easy to reorganize your patches in any manner you see fit using the Wave Manager software. (Unfortunately I don't think you can *rename* the patches in that manner). It's just a drag and drop operation, like moving files around on your computer, essentially. I recommend using one of the empty banks to construct groups of patches in consecutive order as you need them.

There are 3 other ways to organize your patches for live use, as well.

By pushing SHIFT-CHORD you change the Sort Mode from numerical (i.e., by bank and patch number) to alphabetical. Thus, you could give patches, wherever they are located, sequential names corresponding to a song title, i.e. LUVSONG01, LUVSONG02, LUVSONG03.... etc., and by entering alphabetical sort mode, they would reside next to each other (while still existing in their original bank location). If you wanted a whole set to reside together you could start every patch for the set with a shared, unique first couple of characters (i.e. "zz"), followed by a number to sort them internally ("zz001...zz002...zz003...etc.), followed by a brief description of each patch for your sake ("zz001 madlead.... zz002 swellpad.... zz003 bigbass".)

Alternatively, you could push SHIFT-CHORD a second time and enter the other Sort Mode, which sorts patches by Category of sound (i.e. Lead, Organ, Pad, Piano, etc.) There are two categories unused here, called USER1 and USER2. So, you could save all the patches you were using for a live show, while keeping their original names, as USER1 and USER2 categories of sound (instead of Strings, Pads, etc.), and by entering this sort mode all of those patches would be together. Within the category it sorts alphabetically, so by renaming patches using an alphanumeric code of some sort, you could additionally sort them within the Category Sort mode.

While either of these two ways of organizing your patches might come in handy in certain circumstances (i.e., if you had to organize your synth without a computer around and didn't have any empty banks to save patches to), I think it's pretty obvious that the most straightforward approach is to use the Wave Manager software and create a new bank.

Finally, the last organizational tool you have at your disposal is the SLOT A and SLOT B multitimbrality. As long as your patches are only using one of the two available Slots, you could save a second patch (for the same song) in the Slot B location, allowing you to switch back and forth between two sounds at the touch of a button. I think using this capability in combination with organizing your patches in the Wave Manager software you'd be able to come up with a layout that would be suitable for your performance needs.

Hey Radiospace,

Thanks for that very comprehensive reply mate. I've been enlightened.

I'm starting to get the hang of this thing and it's a beautiful instrument.

I was really flapping at first, as every time I tried to save a patch I'd made on the keyboard, it came up with an error saying 'MEMORY PROTECTED'. I later discovered that this is the default setting and can be changed in teh system menu. Happy days!

Take it easy,

Tom

Yes, it's a great synthesizer. Quirky in many ways but that's part of the charm.

I find it one of the best synthesizers I ever had.
The combination of samples and synthwaves is endless Smile
