It was my birthday yesterday! My mrs. baked me this lovely cake:

hooblydoobly

And she also bought me this fantastic little synth:

Waldorf Blofeld

Click the pic to have a look at a lascivious unboxing of the wee beastie! Smile

Sadly, my new baby is a bit poorly, generating grotty chirruping sounds, background distortion and spontaneous glitchtronic odysseys. So, I'm waiting to for it to be exchanged. Even so, through the burps, it's a great synth and I can't wait for a working machine! Very Happy

Fank yeewwww! albino

In the twiddle I've had, I'm very impressed with the LCD interface, makes it super-tweakable. The bizarre thing is that its built like a bloody tank, really heavy and all the encoders are very smooth and expensive feeling. So, I'm a bit sad to get a dodgy one. Ah well! Crying or Very sad

Ignoring the malfunctions, the sound of it is tremendous. Very involving and I'd say it's easily on a par with my Virus Polar. Maybe even better! Cool

I'm very, very impressed with the raw oscillator sounds. And the display of the waveforms is lovely, makes selection so intuitive. I can feel it using all the music-y parts of my brain and leaving the computery/mousey bits alone.

It's killing me that it's sitting, all packed-up, waiting for collection. *sigh*

Happy Birthday!

Sorry to hear you've got a bum Blofeld; hope you get a proper one quickly!

Cheers, Russ! Although now I've got my new modular, the pain of the Blofeld is less pressing! Razz

Happy Birthday Jyoti!

I gave me a Blofeld as a birthday gift too, it arrived yesterday. Unfortunately it seems that my unit isn't working well either Sad

As you say, it makes a lot of distortion in many presets, specially the ones that use the phaser effect. So, I will have to return it, aghhh!

Hmm.. this is sad. Sad

I got a new one on monday - my first had a flaky paint job. And this new one has some issues with distortion and some nonsensical behaviour with parameters and stuff.
Too bad, the Blofeld is one of the best low end synths around ever. It is also built like a tank and it looks absolutely decent inside as well. I´ll return it tomorrow and get my money back. But I´ll grab another one probably a month or three from now when they have the glitches worked out.

Too many defective units I would say. This is not good for Waldorf.

Oh bollocks! I love Waldorf gear and I had hoped my unit was just a rare flakey one. Sad

I hope my new one works when it arrives! Shocked

good luck with the exchange. I bought a used Bloefeld a few months ago and I haven't noticed any problems with it at all. maybe I've just been lucky.

My Blofeld works fine except that sometimes the fourth knob sends updates even though it hasn't been twisted. It hasn't gotten bad enough yet for me to decide to return it under warranty, but I may if it gets worse. It seems to go away as the unit warms up.

Hi
Seems that some bugs I found (system volume knob not working etc), and some other bugs people reported on the waldorf mailing list, only occur if you use midi over USB. So if you're using it over USB you may want to try using a standard midi cable and seeing if the problem disappears.

I tried, but the distortion occurs also when using the MIDI port only (no USB cable attached).

There seems to be a pandemic of Blofeld bugs going around. I hope Waldorf can stay afloat. Crying or Very sad

Absolute got in touch today and my replacement should be arriving some time tomorrow. (Along with a Bose PA but that's a different thread! Razz )

If it's dodgy as well, I might ask for a refund or choose another synth but it'll make me very sad as it's the best birthday pressie ever. Crying or Very sad

Looks like there is a fix for this particular issue at least. Here's a post from Stefan Stenzel on the Waldorf list today:

"I have received some Blofeld units here that emitted the reported
crackling sound on phaser FX and PPG filter. I have been able
to determine the cause and find a cure. I will release a firmware
upgrade next week that will solve these and other issues.

Sorry for the inconvenience,
Stefan"

elektro, I hope you can read this post before returning your Blofeld tomorrow.

I just read a post in the waldorf user forum, where I have been posting about my faulty unit. I think it's interesting.

http://waldorf-forum.com/pipermail/user-forum/2008-August/015059.html

Perhaps we will not have to return our Blofelds after all... I hope so. I wonder what kind of... bug, or whatever can make our units work differently. Maybe a bug in the DPS? A faulty instruction?
