VOCODING_101 Subject description: a place to help others vo-code (modular vocoding ect)...proffesors needed |
 |
|
Welcome to (modular) Vocoding 101. Now all we need is a proffessor or two...or 10. I've tried to build vocoder patches a few times using different modular programs... always having a tough time. I have tried running my voice directly to the FM inputs of oscillators... and it's not working out so great; my vocoder patches basically always sound very harsh, and sensitively freaky. My oscillators on my current program look as follows:
(FM) ....freq dial... ..pulsewidth... ...amount...
(FM) (octave +1,+2)
(LINEAR INPUT) (sin, tri, square, (?) , noise)
(PW)
(PW)
(AM)
(SYNC) (output)
I also have an arsenal of different modules to use on the modular program obviously (synfactory), such as vocoder filter bank, filters (all sorts of crap) and of course I can utilize audio-in and midi and stuff... I've got it where I can controll the pitch of my voice with the midi keyboard but it always sounds extremely harsh with or without filters. Suggestions? Methods? Links to pages about modular vocoding? Any help here would be great. Thanks, from Destroyifyer. |

I've only tried the vocoder in the Nord Modulars, and there my problem is that I tend to lose high frequencies, ending up with a muddy, unintelligable sound. I've tried mixing in a high-passed, but otherwise untreated, input signal, which yields something more listenable.

I had this one at one time but lost it in a move. It's cheap to build, wont sound as good as the classics (Roland VP 300, EML ??) but is better than nothing. If you build it, make sure you do the mod from Scott- it helps to make the output more intelligible.
There's also a link on Paia's page How Vocoders work.
Of course, Google and YouTube are always available too _________________ Free Tibet. Release the Panchen Lama from prison. Let the Dalai Lama return to his home. |
