if you'd like a cheap but effective fourtrack look at GigBaby. 99 cent fourtrack with option to email it to others or to yourself as a wav file.

also Fourtrack is good. you can use it with Riffworks website and work with others.

who else has used this? curious about others opinions.

Well, I was going to ask why anyone would want to limit themselves to just four tracks, especially if they're talking about a software sequencer - until I saw that this is an iPhone app. In that case, any more than four tracks might be more than the iPhone can handle? Just guessing.

Idea It's worth mentioning that many early classic LP's such as those made by The Beatles (Sergeant Pepper for eg) where all recorded on 4-tracks.

its nice to have more than four tracks. i agree. but as a field recorder it is nice. work on ideas. that sort of thing.

i guess for me, i like limitations when it comes to experimental music or music in general. its a challenge.

they do have various other apps that make these two look cheesy. one app is actually a 32 channel midi controller. and they have a more studio version of a recording device.

its us musicians and composers who will push these devices. the more we use them and give our two cents the more the boundaries will be pushed.

True, they were. That's all that was available at the time, though. It wasn't a choice because there were none to be made. Today, it's entirely different. We have freeware software sequencers that can record as many tracks as your computer's CPU and RAM will allow. So, why would anyone voluntarily restrict their capabilities? I can see it if you think of yourself as some sort of "purist" who resists technological advancements. After all, I prefer painting on canvas and paper with real paint and brushes to making virtual paintings on my computer with a Wacom pad and pen. But, I make that choice because I have more control over the painting using traditional media and tools than I would using something like Painter X (which I have). The results are far more satisfying to me. I don't know, maybe one could make a case for the same being true of four track recording. I certainly have nothing against four-trackers. I have one, myself (Tascam Porta 03). I don't use it anymore, though, because I like working with software sequencers and VSTi's, which I find enable me to create better music and do so in less time...well, sometimes in less time. Wink

Ah, yes! I hadn't considered its use as a field recorder. That makes sense, and it makes sense, also, to use an iPhone for this, instead of investing in a specialized portable digital recorder that does nothing but...well, record audio. An iPhone, on the other hand, has multiple uses.

I'm sure the next generation of iPhone apps will probably include more tracks, anyway.

There was rumour of an 8-core Apple touch net book/ tablet with a 10" screen, running OS X Touch (iPhone OS). But like everything Apple, you never know what is gonna happen until it gets released. Evil or Very Mad

I wonder if it's suited for multitrack recording high quality audio with the enormous amount of ram memory this little phone is packing. Smile

Here is something I came across google:

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

http://www.sonomawireworks.com/iphone/fourtrack/

Looking good are the specifications, 1ms latency, 'unlimited' track length, 16bit 44.1K audio.

I no longer wonder, now I know. They'll make it all for these little phones, but I would rather take my tascam 424 to a recording session than my phone (although I will always bring my phone to a recording session Wink ) .

I need crazy and fun stuff, not attempts to be serious or mimic studio gear. That's my personal taste, I encourage everyone to go and use and develop whatever they want, I just prefer the odd.

To give an example, I would like to memo phonecalls, this one does memos:

"# Can Recorder record phone calls?

No. We currently don't have the mechanism to add this feature."

...so close. Very Happy
