Hi all

I recently built a WSG and have had quite a bit of fun with it. I used the brilliant Unkle Krunkus Stripboard version. Now the thing is I have just found that there is a MKII version. How I missed it I don't know Wink Any hoo Master Wilson has kindly put the PCB patterns up for the MKII. But It is a double sided PCB with a couple of tracks on the top side.

I recently began making my own PCB's, for various projects, using the 'toner transfer method'. It is possible to do double boards with this method but for simplicity I stick with single sided. So I have drawn up a single sided version of the PCB replacing the top copper tracks with wire links for 7 of the 8 tracks. The 8th I was able to re-route.

Overall the components are all in the positions on the PCB as per Ray Wilsons design. A few have just been moved slightly to make the changes easier to do. So here's my prototype can anyone give it the once over just to make sure I didn't screw up please. The component numbers are identical and the thick white lines are the silk screen links.

If it is found to be OK I will post up the black and white pattern for the copper side and the silk screen.

regards

Fenris

Well I have checked it over and over myself and I have got all the parts bar 5 switches and the 500K potentiometer. I created my very 750K resistor using 3 resistors to do the job. Basically they are bundled together and adjacent legs wound together. I have sacrificed my veroboard WSG cry
but it's all in a good cause. I will get the PCB image printed ready to transfer cyclops

Heres the full silk screen view as per Ray's original and a look at my triptic resistor.

Hi all

Well I bit the bullet and went to the printers today. With the software and file on my trusty USB stick I got one sheet of 6 patterns printed. 6 because it fills the sheet and also covers me for cockups should I need them Very Happy . I'm glad to say the toner transfer went well with minimal repairs needed. It took about 15 minutes to fix the bits that didn't stick properly and a few tracks where the density seemed a bit off. 15 minutes to etch and here it is.

tomorrow I'll be drilling all the holes ready to mount up Smile

Cheers guys Very Happy

Fingers crossed I checked it well enough Very Happy. The 500K pot is going to cost me a £5!!!!!!!!!!! The majority of that is the postage!!!! Maplins have a 470K pot but I want the proper one!!!

I really will have to look into getting a laminator and modding it to do the job.

OK I'll do that. Maybe on my next big order for bits I'll get it.

Either of them cost only 50P

I even have all the parts in there own storage case ready to
wack into place as soon as Very Happy I just need to sort out a nice
case with the aluminium fascia.

Well I couldn't leave it alone Very Happy Here it is, drilled, cut down to size and the toner cleaned off. 2 hole sizes only 0.7mm for components and 0.9 for the header points.

But I will not start building tonight as the light is too poor to read resistor codes properly.

It nearly wasn't bright enough to drill really. But from that comes the idea of fitting a pair of super bright white LED's I inherited to my PCB drill Idea

Ray Wilson is one top chap! Riding the 'open source' wave on one hand for those of us who can (from scratch) and on the other providing top quality PCB's for all his designs.......... I am very tempted for a soundlab and the mini controller PCB (reminds me of my stylaphone and all the happy hours I spent playing 3 blind mice Very Happy Though I did improve up to chattanooga choo choo Very Happy Very Happy )

Hi Gang

Well heres the board fully populated Smile Took around an hour and some of that was spent removing the IC sockets, diodes and the 2 transistors from the original WSG. Yes I am a scavenger Wink Oh and unless I have made a complete botch of it I got the wire link count down to 5 Very Happy

Well Maplins are out of stock of the 470K pot Mad So I have to wait on that and I will get the 5 switches at the same time. My biggest issue is a suitable piece of aluminium sheet for the fascia. I know you can use the metal tape on a non metal fascia but I wants the precious to look really good Twisted Evil

Heres a pic of the current progress.

Regards

Fenris

I is! Lets really hope I got it right or I will look a proper Charlie Smile Good news is I had to go to Maplins anyway for another job (converting a headset plug from the phone type jack to a pair of 3.5mm jack plugs - Dalek related Very Happy )

Any way just on the off chance I asked for a 470K pot and 'stap me vitals' if they didn't have 2! So I grabbed that and the 5 switches.

The pots and switches scavenged from the 1st WSG will be stripped of their wires ready for the new layup. The recovered wires will of course go into my 'findings' box as they are a useful length.

It is only the ali sheet that is holding me back now, How frustrating!!!!

If you are really in a rush for some aluminum sheet and don't feel like waiting for it to arrive in the mail you can always go to an office supply type store and buy an aluminum clipboard and cut what you need from it. I once did something similar when constructing a power distribution box for my old pedal board.

Excellent Idea Mike I never would have thought of it Very Happy

Sorry RF it's just this once..... Honest guv Embarassed

I don't usually. I subscribe to the if it ain't broke don't fix it method it's just that I missed that there was an improved version when I found the original. Which also explians why some of the posts I read about the WSG didn't seem to tally with what I was looking at Very Happy

Well a trip to a stationers wrought nothing and elsewhere I think they think the clipboard is made of gold the price they were charging for an A4 size. I have some steel sheet (ex TV internal satellite board shielding) but I lack the tooling to handle steel working.

An Aluminium saucepan has been eyed up Very Happy But I don't think the Mrs would appreciate it if I cut it up Wink

This is so frustrating! To keep some sense of sanity I have etched 3 PCB's for my new improved Voice modulator with Sound to light (Daleks again!)

I did think the copper clad would be OK to use but, well, I need it for what it was intended for Very Happy

Another idea would be to use one of those brass kick panel doo-dads that you mount on the bottom of exterior storm doors. I saw them at Home Depot the last time I was there. I really cant remember what the proper name for it is, but here is a picture of what I'm talking about.
http://www.overheaddoorriverton.com/images/exterior_door.jpg
as you can see, it is that panel at the bottom of the door.
They also had stainless, brushed aluminum(I think) and some others in various dimensions.

Fenris you can get aluminium sheet in B&Q, or at least you can in my local one, it's supposed to be for splashbacks in kitchens. That's what I used for my Lunetta.

Surely today it will arrive!?!?!?! But then I only have 2 days to work the ali sheet as I have a long drive on Saturday to go see my dad and daughter. I must be patient.......... To keep myself sane I have etched 3 PCB's 2 of which,
when populated and cased, will be going to a fellow Dalek builder for field testing (Voice mod with sound to light and a bridged amp).

I have also pointed a few chaps to Rays site as I think the WSG will be a great item to add to a Dalek build for an ambient machine type noise.

It's so frustrating! I have the remaining parts sat in front of me ready to mount and wire up Sad

I feel your pain, fenris. Waiting on parts is the worst.
So these Daleks of which you speak...Are they full size replicas? Got any pics?

...The new Dr. Who doesn't do anything for me...

Hi RF

Yep it's frustrating. It's not turning up today by the looks of it Sad
The Daleks are indeed full size replica's. Just about every variant
has been built. This includes, of course, the New Series Dalek or
as it's known the NSD. I have the parts for my 'Genesis build'
That is the difficult bits (fiberglass dome, ali tubes, and most
treasured of all a genuine pair of 70's landrover wipac lenses.
very hard to come by). Heres some pictures of some of my fellow
enthusiasts creations.

A couple more. Storm, Max and the Supreme were all built by my friend Alan Clark. He is a prodigious and probably the fastest Dalek builder in the world Very Happy . One of the projectdalek forums builders actually had his NSD requisitioned by the BBC for the Christmas special with Davros. They actually only have 3 full props and needed a 4th.
Some of the Daleks in the pictures have my Voice mod. I have built some and supplied kits and PCB's. I have handled 36 and at least 5 people have built from scratch using the DIY manual supplied free via the projectdalek forum.

I quite like Tennant. Ecclestone was very good also but 'my' Dr is Tom Baker.

enjoy
