I am trying to control the Poly Evolver and Evolver on a MIDI daisy chain (Evolver THRU to Poly IN). I have them set to different MIDI channels and the MIDI tracks in Ableton are set to only transmit on those particular channels. However, for some reason the Poly is ending notes based on the Evolver's track and displaying CC automation that is only supposed to be going to the Evolver. It's in Program mode and Poly Chain is off on both units so I don't know why this is happening. Any ideas?

welcome to the forum.

sounds a bit weird.

Have you used a midi monitor to check live is sending the correct stuff?

Cheers

Don't think that it'll be my sig forever! Laughing
I just wanted to preserve it for posterity, as it's other habitat seemed under threat. Once you've incorporated it into a set of lyrics, I'll come up with another sig.
I decided a while ago that I shouldn't be afraid of change.
Change, afterall, is the only certainty. Wink

I liked it so much i put it in my sig! It made me think of the universe, the big bang, the collision course our galaxy is on with another galaxy, and stuff like that. Not to mention life and aging and whatever...

Don't know if that's what you mean, but I think sigs aren't preserved - just like avatars, when you change your sig it changes in all posts you've ever made.

Back on topic: Gigamesh, I too have one desktop and one poly Evolver. I'll see if I can reproduce your problem when I get back home this evening (working saturday=good money but no Evolver-twiddling).

/Stefan

Sounds like the Poly is responding to all channels, and in that case, the problem is not in the Evo MIDI Thru, because it's certainly passing the data along.

I would first re-check which channel(s) the Poly is responding to. I don't have one so I don't know if you can have each voice in a different channel, or if its mono-timbral. In the former case, it is possible that even if you set the Poly to respond "globally" to a specific channel (which is typically the channel the keyboard would transmit), some of the voices are set to respond to other channels.

Oh yeah... I just looked at the manual (pages 18 and 49), and effectively, you can set a global channel and a per-part channel. Probably one or more of these channels are set to "All" or coincide with the Evo channel.

If the PEK is in program mode (as gigamesh describes) then it acts as a four voice monotimbral synth. If it's in combo mode then effectively acts like 1-4 separate evolvers, depending on how you configure each combo part.

Just did an experiment - made a clip in Live that sends notes + a filter cutoff sweep (cc 52). Set the PEK to midi channel #1 and the Live strip to midi channel #1. When I start the clip notes start to play and the filter sweeps up and down. When I change the Live strip to midi channel #2, the notes stop playing but according to the PEK's display the filter keeps sweeping! However the audio doesn't seem to be affected at first, but if I tweak the cutoff knob the threshold goes up and down in a totally weird way. Also, if I tweak something else, it will change properly but the display will keep showing "Lowpass Filter Frequency" witha blurry number going up and down.

I tried switching to a 4 part combo setup, and when I set the Live clip to channel #1 and play the part that listens to midi channel#1 plays notes and sweeps like expected, but the other parts behave like for program mode above.

Having controls react to all channels when in program mode could be seen as just a quirky implementation, but in combo mode midi CC is outright unusable, in my opinion. This has to be an oversight by DSI - we should try to get this bugfixed in an update or something.

But this is only a display problem, right? I mean, the PEK is only displaying all the CC values it receives, but the actual sound is what it should be, right?

Anyway, there's an OS update for the Prophet 08 which adds the option to turn off display of incoming controller data. The display will still show tweaks made on the synth panel, but will not show anything that comes through the MIDI IN port. Maybe there's a similar update for the Evolvers?

Not quite - the frequency knob behaves differently when there are values on CC 52 coming in on another channel. The impression I got while I had the triangle sweep on CC 52 was that, as I continuously turned the filter knob clockwise, the threshold went quickly up and down between min and max when it should have gone slowly up to max and stayed there - asme if I continuously turned counterclockwise. When I left the knob alone the filter didn't change (though the display kept showing filter threshold = xx).
