Subject description: pdf with PCB layout and schematics - CORRECTED VERSION
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

EDIT: It was pointed out that the PCB layout in the previous version had an error. All files have been updated accordingly. I tested the layout below and it works just fine!
If you use the previous version you'll get a working rimshot, however, it will not sound as nice as this one does...

Sorry for the inconvenience Embarassed

Hi all,

I am slowly working on my drum machine, a Midibox MB808 sequencer with various analog voices.
Last night I finished a clone of the Boss DR-55 Rimshot and I thought that some of you might be interested.

See the attached pdf for details.

Note that there is no volume control as -in my case- a separate mixer will take care of that. Also there is no accent - I simply feed the signal into the DR110 accent circuitry that already is in my drummachine Wink

Thanks for this, I wasn;t able to open the file though. I really like the DR-55; was used all over the first New Order record, Movement, and probably on Procession and Everything's Gone Green singles. Will you be making other 55 clones?

I don't know why you could not open the pdf... I used Illustrator to make it.
Try this jpg (but I am not sure if the scaling of the PCB foil will still be correct. It might be, though)

No, I do not plan to make more Dr-55 clones. The drummachine I am building already has a complete DR-110 voice board inside it, and I just felt that a rimshot was missing.

Edit: uploaded corrected version

Its adobe reader. I've had problems now and in the past. Updating might help but if you have done it in illustrator it could be that which needs updating.

Thanks for posting this. Should R40 be connected directly to Q6? The schematic looks a bit different from your PCB. On your version it goes through R41.

yeah i know... i uploaded a hastily corrected version, but then i realised that the file was missing something, so i took it down again.

i just didnt have the time to work on it yet... soon, though. maybe tonight.
first i have to meet with some friends - we're having a generator powered drum n bass outdoor rave saturday night, so there are more pressing matters i have to attend to right now Wink

(if you are near münster, germany, make sure to drop by - it's under the bridge at umgehungsstrasse / agravis in the industrial area behind the cineplex. BYO booze)

Last edit from me in this thread, at least I hope so: My D&B rave was a huge success, thanks for asking Wink
The rimshot as it is shown now is working and true to the original. Have fun! Boy, next time I'll be more careful and triple-check everything, I promise...

Since I haven't got the necessary etching gear, I might stripboard this one. Thanks! Smile

PS, where would a decay pot go, if possible?

Ok, I've built this, but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe because I don't have a trigger source? So far I have tried shorting the trigger to ground, applying voltage to the trigger, sending a gate signal (I hear a feint click with note off signal - but nothing like the example in the MP3).

What exactly is a trigger signal? How many volts, and what is the duration?

Maybe someone could look over my stripboard layout and see if they can spot any obvious mistakes (forgetting D2 which should read D4). I did substitute C33 (0.0027) for a 0.0022, but I don't think that would make any major difference?

Whenever I'm in doubt, I check out CGS! Very Happy

http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/index.html#cgs24

very quick to bb, once you hear the differance between gate & trigger it will make more sense, at least it did for me.

Hi there,

I thought it would be nice to implement a CVin for the "tuning".

Here is the schematic for what I've done... just used a npn where the "tune" resistor was.

It responds nicely to 0-5v ish. Only trouble is the CV bleeds right through to the output.

Can anybody suggest how I might solve this?

Also open to suggestions re a better way to achieve my goal... not sure if my add-a-transistor method is very good practice. Maybe I should do something with an optoisolator?

Thanks,
C

I know its an old thread, but the values...C33, C25, C29, C30, C31...0,0027, etc., these are pF or nF or uF values?

You can refer to my hand drawn schematic above to get the cap values. I labeled them all with multipliers.
