I was wondering if there is any way I could map midi controls to standard Windows applications.

It'd be nifty to be able to scroll my Winamp playlist with one of my sliders, or scroll down in Firefox, or even adjust my PC's volume.

That would be nice, but I've never seen such a thing.

Someone wanted to add this to KeyKit. Don't know what ever happened with it. But it seemed he was also toying with Bome's Midi Translator along with PowerPro (a tool to control programs). Here's his post on the KeyKit forum:

Yes, this is possible. There are multiple options:

1. AutoHotkey with the available midi input library (search in the AutoHotkey forum)
2. Bome's Midi Translator which was already mentioned above.
3. GlovePIE should be able to do this also.

I would use the first option as AutoHotkey gives you a lot more power than a newbie might imagine in the beginning, if following midi event types are enough for you:

- note.pitch
- cc
- pitchbend

which are supported by the midi input library for AutoHotkey. In the case of Winamp you can have very extensive control via the Winamp API, AutoHotkey can access this API and you can do anything you want what this API allows.

I hope this helps a little.
