Have you built one? |
 |
|
| The soundlab seems to be very popular, but how many of you have build the DIY modules on MFOS website? I´m curious since finding some parts is a real pussle, and there isn´t that many questions about for example the tantlum capacitors, replacement for Mica capacitors and the partlists in general. How accurate are the partlist? |

Hi if837!
I think I've built most of the modules from MFOS at least once - some of them several times.... I've also built the 16 step sequencer, the Keyboard controller, the Soundlab and just getting started on a Soundlab Ultimate.
I've found the parts lists to be very accurate.
Lots of people have built these - and Ray is quite good at getting them right.
Tantalums and for that matter most of the parts can be found on-line pretty easy. Personally, I use Digi-Key a lot, also Jameco and Mouser...
and I'm pretty good at scavaging parts from old electronics
Good luck!

thankyou
could I use normal electrolytic capacitors instead of tantalums in most
cases if I can´t find the right tantalums values ? |

I think in most cases you would be fine with doing that....

I'm currently building a pair of MFOS voltage quantizers. I purchased the PCB's from the MFOS website I had no problem finding all the parts at Mouser. _________________ -- Kevin

next time I will try and do the same, order everything from Mouser.
unfortunately I don´t have a credit card and they charge a $25 fee for using their bankaccount. But it will probably be cheaper than buying from several different ebay sellers, like I did this time. |

49.9K, 499K resistors |
 |
|
the 49.9K and 499K resistors stated as value 5% (carbon)
I can´t find any, shoud´nt it be 1% metal resistors ? |

Yes those values don't make much sense as 5% values (and they're not E12 values), but you can always substitute a 1% metalfilm for a 5% carbon resistor if you can't find some value. _________________ Jan

thanks for clearing this up
so I just replace it with the same value but an metal resistor instead.
I dont have to replace it with 5 metalresistors (1% x5)= matched resistors? |

Nope ... the tolerance says something about how accuratly the resistor was manufactured, with a tolorance of 5% on a 10k resistor the actual value could be 95k .. 105k. Noe that same resistor with a tolarance of 1% would be 99k .. 101k - so guaranteed to be more closely to the nominal value of 100k than the 5% case ... so it's just better. _________________ Jan
