TRINITY COLLEGE, DUBLIN
School of Music

Mendelssohn in the Long 19th-century
Preliminary announcement

A four-day conference will be held at Trinity College, Dublin, hosted by
the School of Music, from 14-17 July 2005, in association with the
Department of Germanic Studies (Trinity College, Dublin) and the Society
for Musicology in Ireland (SMI).

Sessions are expected to develop the following themes:
Mendelssohn reception during his lifetime: Mendelssohn in Europe; the
context of German musical life and institutions; stylistic interaction and
pluralism in music, art and literature.
Mendelssohn posthumous reception up to the 20th-century: compositional
reception in late 19th-century; Mendelssohn in music history and
performance history; phases in Mendelssohn scholarship and biographical issues.
Aesthetic and cultural issues: the treatment of genres and the reappraisal
of forgotten works; historicism, music-making and musical consumption;
Mendelssohn's 'jewishness'.

Forthcoming information about call for papers and the conference website
will be posted in due course on the relevant music discussion lists.

Q. How can you tell if the stage is level?
A. Drool comes out of both sides of the drummer's mouth.
