Mendelssohn in the Long 19th-century
Preliminary announcement
A four-day conference will be held at Trinity College, Dublin, hosted by
the School of Music, from 14-17 July 2005, in association with the
Department of Germanic Studies (Trinity College, Dublin) and the Society
for Musicology in Ireland (SMI).
Sessions are expected to develop the following themes:
Mendelssohn reception during his lifetime: Mendelssohn in Europe; the
context of German musical life and institutions; stylistic interaction and
pluralism in music, art and literature.
Mendelssohn posthumous reception up to the 20th-century: compositional
reception in late 19th-century; Mendelssohn in music history and
performance history; phases in Mendelssohn scholarship and biographical issues.
Aesthetic and cultural issues: the treatment of genres and the reappraisal
of forgotten works; historicism, music-making and musical consumption;
Mendelssohn's 'jewishness'.
Forthcoming information about call for papers and the conference website
will be posted in due course on the relevant music discussion lists.
