the question is:

If we are not to exceed the maximum input to the studio topaz desk we must not input a singal greater than 4dBu.The input to this professional desk is fed from a semi-professional preamp that is rated in dBV.
i wish to set the level of the preamp to effect the maximum gain.If i input a signal from an SM58 with max amplitude of 3mV,then what is the gain setting (in dBV) for the pre-amp

can somebody show me the working out to this question please,as i have been handed it for a portfolio but i dont understand any of this.

thanks guys

welcome glad to have you here.

I deleted you duplicate post in the Schmooze forum. We don't like cross posting here.

Yours is a very good question. I'm not personally qualified to anwer it. I hope someone who can chimes in. I'm a seat-of-the-pants engineer. I just adjust the levels until things sound right. I know there are people that are very big into calibration, but I've personally never seen the need for this.
