I'm not sure what you mean by Prophet style knobs -

Musicstore and Thomann have this photos on the PE edition.
You can also buy a Prophet knob kit for the MEK and PEK.
Looks IMO way better and with more quality. Smile

But my question: are this Prophet knobs really better?

I seem to remember that the knobs were OK. I do prefer way huger knobs like on my dotcom modular as these provide longer travel. As for the Mek/Pek.. the real issue is like Antimon explained more about the actual device the knob is attached to.. like the quality of the encoders.

The original PEK used endless encoders that would always edit values incrementally, like on a Nord Modular G2 or Alesis Ion or BCR2000. They also used this on the first Prophet '08s. Due to the amount of problems they had with these encoders, a couple of years ago they started making Prophets and Evolvers using non-endless, old-style encoders (is there some good term for these?), like you'll find on the old Nord Modular or Nord Lead or common modular modules or general pre-00's synthesizers. They also issued a kit that could be used to modify existing Evolver keyboards from endless to the more robust non-endless knobs.

@shrecks: the pictures you posted are of the more robust, non-endless encoder version. I have an older version with endless, dodgy encoders.

Re: the desktop mono Evolver - this uses yet another kind of endless encoder which in my experience is more robust than the endless ones I have on the PEK.
