Newbie needs some help |
 |
|
| Hello all, looking to get started into Electronic music creation. Largely I want to see what kind of Industrial Project I can come up with. Are there any books that would be a good reference to start with? Also what are good beginners tools to work with. I am looking to do something on the lines of Funker Vogt or Wumpscut. |

check the "getting started" thread under how-tos.
I don't know those bands, so can't help you with that aspect. |

Getting started |
 |
|
I would first start with something easier -- ambient or "house" music.
I'm a Big Fan of German Industrial music (Einsturzende Neubaten, Haujobb, Project Pitchfork, etc), and I can say, based on experience, that
THAT type of music is one of the most difficult to do. (esp. groups like EN!).
Don't get me wrong......ANYONE can make "noise" or "industrial" electronic music, but to do it WELL is VERY difficult!!!!!!!!!!! (That's why i suggested that you start with another genre).

Hey Jagdwolfe.. you forgot to tell if you are new to musicmaking too? You do not play an instrument or do you?
Is this a case about both obtaining music skills and also about making electronic music of the kind that you mentioned?
I agree with Norm. Easier to start out with something like what he suggests. |

Starting Out |

I'm curious as to how many people can actually read music / "play" a keybd, and how many people just "noodle around with it", as I do!
Norm I think i'll start a POLL! _________________

Can you provide a few links where we can hear some very good industrial electronic music? Feel free to include your own music, if you think it qualifies.
I'm not sure I exactly understand the term "industrial". _________________ --Howard

Industrial? |
 |
|
Hmm.....if you've ever listed to Front 242, or Einsturzende Neubaten, you'd know what it is immediately!
This is how I define it. Usually, it's VERY fast (160 bpm +), pounding, with a lot of (industrial!) noise, like clanging pipes, power tools, screaming vocalist, etc.
I would interpret it as "angst music against the 'machine age'", and the de-humanisation because of it. A gloomy, pessimistic view of the future like the silent film "Metropolis". The struggle for human supremacy against the machines that are taking over our life. And agonised cry against the future.
Man! Was that "artsy", or what?!?!?! LOL! Our parents (and, LOL! some of US!) would call it "noise" and "headache music"! Actually it IS "noise"....but "the Art of Noise", to quote the name of a classic avante-garde group.
It's an "acquired taste". A lot of NIN is considered "Industrial". ("Closer").
Also, Rammstein, but THEY make it much more "musical".
I attempted it with my "Voice of Terror" composition....altho i was more into creating "intereting samples".
Hope this helps!

Industrial.. hmm.. there have been several discussions of what the term means over at the http://www.lustmord.com/deepnet.
Back in the 70s industrial usually was of the more noisy electroacoustical kind.. artyfarty without the beans.. in the 80s english stuff like Throbbing Grisstle and SPK might fit the term. I am not quite sure "industrial" carries any meaning these days when applied to music. |
