Commuter's Diary I - tracks |
 |
|
Here I am going to post individual tracks that made up most of Commuter's Diary I show. You'll find the original thread about it here.
What ended up being compiled into Commuter's Diary were short tracks that I made on an iPod Touch using the awesome NanoStudio app. The tracks were made while travelling back and forth on trains between Malmö and Copenhagen, due to an assignment I had in Denmark. The iPod and headphones made me lose myself in the world of music instead of the terror of poorly functioning and overcrowded trans.
All of these tracks are short, spanning from less than half a minute to about three minutes. The really short ones may not be very interesting - I found use for them as "glue" in the mix for the show.
I also recorded sound while walking home from my assignment one day, and riding the train. I used this in the mix for the show.
You'll find the order here is different from the show - I'll post the individual tracks in chronological order. The tracks' names include the date they were made, except for the earliest ones. _________________ Antimon's Window

The first tracks I made on NanoStudio, probably all from early october 2010. I loved that app right away!

Here are the first ones that I marked with a date. The format is year (2 digits) followed by month followed by day.

At this point I figured it might be nice to remember whether I had made a track in the morning (while travelling to work in Copenhagen) or in the evening (while travelling back home to Malmö), so I started adding "a" or "p" to the end of the track names, indicating "am" - morning or "pm" -evening respectively. I added a number too, if I should happen to do more than one track on during a single ride.
I liked Sb101021_p1, so I made it longer in the show mix, duplicating some parts and adding some effects to liven things up.
Sb101022-p1 and sb101026_a are the longest tracks so far. This may be due to me getting more handy with NanoStudio, but the more likely cause is train failure, leaving me stuck on the rail somewhere, with more time to spend on the iPod.
Sb101025_a1 has a bouncy lead that I like. I think I made this one a bit longer in the mix.
sb101026_p1 started off the mix that I used in the show. It has a propelling/driving feel to it that I felt might be a good way to kick things off.

sb101027_p could illustrate some of the things I like about having a platform such as NanoStudio to work with. Since it's so easy to start from scratch and quickly do a composition, you can try out different kinds of stuff without having to spend a lot of energy on turning things on, connecting cables, thinking out a workflow etc.
This track starts with long upwards sweeps of notes from chords using some pattern - something that I might think of doing, but if I would need to switch on a computer, a couple of synths, get the DAW up and running, chances are the energy threshold would be too high, and I would stay in the comfy chair in front of the TV instead. If I have a gadget with NanoStudio handy, all I need is a couple of clicks on the touch screen and I'm up and running, trying out the note sweeps, adding drums, more notes, and I've got a finished track.

I wonder what happened on the morning of 101103... only 23 seconds? I must have been sick or something.
I made up for it in the evening I think. I'm happy with that one, it's another I might want to make a bit longer sometime.
Sb101104_p1 turned out nice too. I made it longer in the mix. It's one of those tracks that folks here might describe as "happy", while my parents might describe it as "sad". This track puts a lot of lowpass filtering on stuff - I tend to like how lowpass works when smacked brutally across several sounds, especially on the drums - something I discovered as I worked with the tracks in this thread.

Sb101105_a1 is very non-tonal and rythmical, another personal favourite. I think this is another example of something that is more likely to happen when I try it out on the iPod, than when I dabble around in the studio, due to the ease of messing about with NanoStudio. I think it started out as en experiment with some particular kind of modulation that I was wondering about as I walked to the train, and went from there as I liked what the modulation did.
These two tracks are the last ones I did before putting together the first Commuter's Diary show, thus concluding the Nanostudio track posts in this thread.
