Video Synths, DIY VJing, etc.
I've been scrounging the net for "Video Synths" and older analog visualization devices with schematics and have come up completely empty handed.
I know that software is all the rage, but I'm looking for a DIY hands-on modular type device, to run alongside my audio analog modular. Lot's of great sounding machines but no clues how to make one...

Why not just get an old oscilloscope? You can see the waveforms of the music, or use the X-Y mode to create lissajous patterns and such. Put your left channel on X and your right on Y, instant video show. Or is that not what you had in mind?
In the days before software could do any video processing, there were some hardware video synths. They can be found used, but are still expensive:

Thanks egw for replying, and great site you have btw.
Some of your links are defunct, some lead to exactly what I'm looking for minus the schematics, and others lead to software equivalents which are what I was hoping to avoid.
I pretty much want to take original and found footage, sequence it to music and add effects/anomalies via a hands-on interface. My mind doesn't lend well creatively to software but I guess that's what I'm left with, eh?

You don't necessarily need software for this. You could use a dvd player and a korg entrancer
Or a couple of dvd players, a video camera, mixer (e.g. edirol v-4) and the entrancer. You can do a lot of real time effects with this combination, but not real time triggering of the video clips. _________________ www.gregwaltzer.com

Thread resurrection....
I am taking a video class and have been fascinated by the world of visual fx & generators.
I want to explore the VJ realm--the sorts of things I seek (tempo synced fx, LFO modulations) don't appear to be a central feature of the video editors I've used. Basically I'd like a setup that could respond to control events created by a modular software music synth. Still, I'm managing to get a lot done with keyframe automation in Sony Vegas Platinum 10.
I recently came across this manufacturer of a voltage controlled modular video synthesizer in the Eurorack format:

Will post some links to things I'm working on soon!

Quite frankly, I would expect you to have better luck looking for newer analog visualation devices. There is a user on this forum, Creator Jim, who was building his own video synth I remember. He posted pics of it and a link to some demonstrations somewhere in the DIY forum.

As we resurrect ... Visual Jockey is free now
I have been using Visual Jockey, it's got some great stuff and yes, it is free! I totally recommend it for a beginner (like myself).
I scanned some of my art & applied effects, & made some .avi movies that we used with our E-m performance last year. However after awhile one starts to run out of 'tricks' with the bag of effects, now I'm looking for other ways to make videos. I would like to learn how to make a video that is more interactive/responsive with the music.
I wish there could be a workshop at E-M about VJ'ing. _________________ The most important gear is the brain behind the instrument.

If you have an iPad,this is pretty cool. You can mix 2 videos each with it's own effect filter (think Photoshop: swirl, wave, kaleidoscope, edge, posterize, etc.)and an effect on the master as well.
I haven't tried the video out,I've read a complaint in comments that it's not particularly hi res, but, yanno,it's only $9.99 too.
