March Equinox 2013 - Testing ports Subject description: Changing names

| Thanks, Blue Hell,
Yeah, sorry about all the confusion. I probably should've just stuck with synthrabbi. Sounds like the better stage name.

And, it's a distinction: I am probably the only Rabbi anywhere in the world playing electronic music streaming tomorrow. Probably on any day of the week, but especially tomorrow since it's the Sabbath.

Who the hell knows: I might be the first Rabbi to do this anywhere ever… Possibly in history!

But my clergy days are over. I'm just not that guy.

I do know all of our ancient ancestors used to play electronic music only by candlelight. You can look it up.

All I know is I'm happiest when I'm playing music.

Thanks to all those who are making it possible for all of us to be able to express our creativity in this way.

 | |
|
 |
| I have decided to christen my contribution to the event Unit Impulse.
I conceived of the piece a few years ago, when thinking of how the banjo's rapid attack and decay is somewhat an approximation of the unit impulse.

I was going to compose it for electro-music 2012, but then zero-input mixing possessed me.

Jeremy helped me capture several one-open-G-note samples from my trusty Bart Reiter Whyte Ladie 5-string earlier this week. (You'll shoot your eye out, kid!) We settled on the one in the first photo and the audio sample below. That is the only sound in my upcoming performance, albeit processed somewhat using Ableton Live, Kyma (the Pacarana is hiding behind the laptop) and the effects unit in the Yamaha MG124cx mixer. I decided to toss in the mixer in solidarity with Ganzha (see above) and also State Machine (I used it in all my zero-input mixer sessions).

There are 5 movements as I am now practicing the piece. Each one gets initiated by a button on the Trigger Finger, and each has a fader there as well. Once a movement's "Live stochastic state machine" thus goes into motion, it's all about mouse and keyboard twiddling inside of Ableton, along with detours into Kyma and the mixer. That one note gets around.

| Well, one nice thing about BUTT is you can set it to auto record. Of course, that doesn't count when you connect up 10 minutes early, think "oh let me stop the recording, of course I'll remember to turn it back on before I go live" and then recall 5 minutes into the performance that you didn't actually restart the recording. So we miss the intro... This piece will end up being done over anyway, I quite like what it was doing, if I do say so myself.

| As usual, I'm downloading every file -- Saturdays tend to be pretty wild for me and I'm in and out of the studio.
I usually listen to music during the workday -- I have a nice pair of noise-cancelling headphones with excellent frequency response and usually have fewer interruptions during the workday than I do around here on the weekends.

I listen to people's tracks on on good equipment -- be it with headphones or speakers -- so much goes into the music that I want to experience it with high-quality sound.

I really appreciate that many of the participants record their sets and post them.
