Hi

I would like to pan each of the Andromeda's 16 voices independently. From what I have read in the manual and on the forum, I understand that this is unable to be done within the Andromeda itself.

Given this, I would like a high quality "mixer" so that I can take the 8 stereo individual voice outputs and pan them, summing to a stereo output. Does anyone have any good recommendations? A compact form factor is a must, ideally utilising a DB-25 connector. Even open to a DIY option. I only need pan (no level meters/pots are required).

Any help would be greatly appreciated Smile

Mike

a simple a+h or mackie vlzpro mixer with 16 mono inputs would do the trick
you need pan + summing, the rest will be free extra bonus

( the stereo outputs of the a6 are in fact dual mono, so you'll need a converter cable X8 )

Thanks Sunny. I thought of that too but was hoping to use something with a smaller footprint. Will continue to see what is out there.

something like this ? (warning, it's not cheap Wink)

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

I've seen small rackmount mixers with 8 channels but 16 is a lot. Some of those can be linked though,. so 2x8 could work.
(I haven't seen anything with just panning,. only combined with level pots)

on the other hand DIY wouldn't be very hard,..

a bit expensive but nice the neve

on the other hand, something simple like random pan, or low notes left, high notes right, etc can be achieved by modulating the pan by note number , using the tracking generator etc.
also using different patches within a mixpatch with different pan might also be helpful

Thanks for the tips. Given that I want individual voice panning the only way I'm going to get it properly is via an external mixer. I'll look at getting someone to build me a summing box with pan as the Neve is too expensive just for this application. Man, I wish this could be done insie the Andromeda itself. That would be awesome!

for individual/ mono voices this can be done( voice mode, above the volume and pan knobs)
for polysounds it can only be done global

I know that the main outputs are balanced but are the individual voice outputs balanced or unbalanced?

they are unbalanced ( stereo plug to two voices ), which is not really interested as the signal is hot enough to travel undistorted to your mixer over meters of cable

Ah yes. Of course Smile Thanks Sunny.

Jez, the Fostex looks interesting! Thanks for the suggestion.

I found a great work around in the Andromeda Tips and Tricks document (Sections 5.10 and 5.11). Thanks guys!

5.10 setting up random panning:
What I do: I turn the Sample and Hold section on, with voice random, and level 100.
However, I turn the VOXTRG on and the TRGSMP on as well. This means that the sample
and hold will sample one position, and hold it there, for one note.
The VOICE MIX modulation then gets the S&H modulation to the pan control. I typically set
the modulation around 30, with the offset at –30 . Another suggestion was to use 100 on the
S&H modulation with the offset at –45 .
Another way of doing panning that is cool, is to use the VOX KEY NUMBER to pan the
sound.
Brian Kehew’ s guide:
Most of the patches I made us this. What I like is one "position" per Voice played, rather than
moving notes (both possible). Check the Panning section - it would be modulated by the S/H
section. Observe the settings for Amount and Offset. Then, go to S/H and copy the settings
ESPECIALLY the TRIG section. Sorry not to be more specific with values, but my A6 is not in front
of me. I'm pretty sure it's:
Panning - Mod Source = (S/Hold) Amount= (100) Offset= (-40)
S/Hold section: Mod Source = (Voice Random)
All three TRIG Modes are ON ON ON on the right.
5.11 colin’s guide to random panning:
After playing around with values - here is my dummies guide to get it working. Part 1 will just get the
simple voice panning working and then you'll having glorious stereo pads!
Best to start with a sound with fastish attack and long sustain.
1. Goto to the Sample and Hold screen (S&H button - far left) Mod source to be set at
VoiceRandom (default) - set it at level 100 with an offset of -50 (important as this makes it Bipolar)
2. enter the S&H 's Trig page (soft button 2)
Select VOX KEY ON VEL - level should be zero
Bipolar (not sure if this is necessary)
Enable Trigger and TriggerSample
3. Hit the Main/Aux Pan MOD button (on the far right)
Set a level of 100 if you want full stereo spread or say 50 for a partial spread. Offset should be
zero.
HIT SOME NOTES and bask in the stereo analog warmth Smile
I forgot to add - you don't have to use VoiceRandom as a ModSource for the Sample and Hold, try
the LFOs for example. Anything that constantly changed value over time on its own is a valid input.
Infact a Triangle LFO is even better as it isn't so random
