Hi everybody,

I need some help in the ever so popular "How to make this sound" corner.

The sound attached is from a Roland System 100M and it's frequency modulation of a sine with a saw and I've been told it's a specialty of Roland synths. I think it sounds fantastic. Like electricity snapping through a wire.

Oh, ye Masters of patching, how do you do this on a G2?

Sounds like aliasing on FM modulation .. maybe experiment with the quality reduction module ... what is it called again ... and or use LFO's instead of oscillators.

The Roland is an analogue synth so it can't be aliasing. It's original is made with a self-oscillating filter and a saw oscillator FM'ing it. I don't even get close to it on a G2.

Hi sebber,

Interresting ! Do you have a G2 patch exemple to see what you tried ? Did you start by reproducing a self-oscillating filter or do you use a sine OSC module ?

You're right, I changed the sine oscillator with a self-oscillating filter and it does add quite some grid. Snappy envelope to it and playing an octave lower an on some keys it's 80% there. It should probably also use a shape oscillator and not a clean one for triangle and saw.

I attached the patch with sine and self-oscillating filter, the original patch with the triangle sound which works nice and for your viewing pleasure the score of Parmegiani. Top system is the tape part, then SR: Synth Roland System 100M, SA: originally an Arp 2600, later a Synthi AKS and SY, a Yamaha CS-40M. That last one was really hard to find.

I tested your .pch. If I can help :

1. To get a clean sine wave you need to use the 12 db/oct slope instead of the 24 db/oct (with the Nord Modular G2). Look my exemple in the .pch, variation 8. Have you tested your "self-oscillating filter" without modulation ?

2. You need to stop the white noise when the filter is "self oscilating" to the proper amplitude. More the frequency is low, the sound plays longer.

I edited your patch a little bit. I added 2 modules and 1 cable.

variation 8 is a self-oscillating filter sine exemple.
variation 7 is more close to "Roland FM Sine with Tri.wav".
variation 6 I just added a bit of resonance to get the "swap" effect. Play with the Pitch, FM lin parameter on the Nord filter module and with the rectifier module.

That's just a start Smile

This has been laying dormant for a while, but Variation 4 led me to where I wanted it to be. Sounds very electromagnetic now, Electromagnetic, thanks a lot! I sounds great now! And I learned a lot.

Cheers
Sebastian

Time is relative ! :p

good! you see variation 4!! Wink

I remember after I saw the roland_fm_825.pdf I took this as a personal small chalenge and I made another version with modulation very close to the audio file. But I think I deleted it recently... Sad

Electromagnetic, you just invented the time machine. Because if you google "roland_fm_825.pdf" you will see your own post but with four different time stamps all from 2013. It's magic.

wow I see that ! Time travel bug, google bug or internet marketing/ SEO black hat ?!! funny! Wink

From me :
Quote:
More the frequency is low, the sound plays longer.

A workaroud to prevent this is to send the output filter in the input filter (loop). Like this, the sound is not atenuate very fast with high frequencies. I added a new exemple. Just check the self-oscillating filter routing.

Edit : oh I forgot to mention : Replace the Nord filter with the classic filter and change the slope (12 or 18 db / oct) to get others textures

Hello everybody,
this is my first post in this forum.
Not least because of your interesting posts and tricks I would like to buy the Nord Modular G2 me.
It will take years, until I come to the vicinity of your know-how.

As the title of this thread already exactly contrary are my first question, I now wanted to also start a new thread.

you're here so apparently able to replicate virtually every conceivable synthesis forms with the G2.
I have here two mp3s to which I wanted to ask if you can recreate the well?

I can not currently imagine where to begin there.
The first file is a sound from Yamaha CS6x and is an extract of a demo.
The second file is the sound "Midnight Buzz" from the FM7.

how can i upload mp3s here?

Is something possible with a NM G2

Greeting, Faltac.

Welcome faltac,

The best is probably to open a new topic about your request. Tell us if you have access to a G2 or if you use the demo software.

Use the option 'Add an Attachment'

Convert this file from .ksd to .syx and use the DX2G2 tool to convert it to .pch2. Yes, the G2 can reproduce patch from DX7m FM7/8!
