I'm a noob at synthesizers so please don't be too harsh.

I built Thomas Henry's vca-1 and the cv works fine ,but I don't get sound (frequency) when I press a key just a click from the gate.
From my understanding if I plug a gate signal into cv and a frequency into the audio input it will produce a sound only when I press a key on my keyboard.

My current setup:
Gate from my controller -> cv input
Frequency generator -> audio input

Hi cchinchole,

You should use an ADSR-Envelope-Gen. Then your setup seems like this:

VCA <- (out)ADSR(gate input) <- Gate
/\
||
VCO or other audio source

Very Happy.

Greetings Ano

Using an ADSR is the most common way but it should still work with just a gate signal. Unless it is only a short trigger pulse.

Its possible that the gate signal is not high enough to fully open the VCA. I believe most gate signals on relatively new gear is 5vdc but the VCA may require a higher voltage...say 10vdc. Depending on whether its a log or linear response VCA could determine whether you hear anything or not.

Does your VCA have a gain control? If so try turning it up to see if any audio comes thru.
