Hi all! So i decided it it's time for me to take care of this good ole tape echo unit (a SE-300) and i need advice since i'm far from savvy in the matter and my readings didn't bring much useful. It's basically working, all i want is put in its best form. So far i just cleaned it thoroughly - the heads with isopropyl alcohol and pinchroller with q-tips and water, checked the ballbearings which seem ok and are anyway of the closed type, not sure if a drop of oil would help. Planned is to replace the felt pads, still have to pay a visit at the piano shop around the corner, no big deal.
Now come the important points: i think i should change the tape loop (since i'm using a replacement of obscure origin). From searching the internets and beside considerations about mojo and whatnot, it appears that what i need is lubricated tape. Does it make sense? Would tape from an 8 track cart actually do? i've read about silicon coated tape while i read those 8 tracks being graphite lubricated. Now i'm confused. Or don't we care which type?
i've also read contrasted things about tape thickness. .5 mil? 1 mil? (on this model the tape is only pulled, not pushed) Does anyone know of a source for convenient tape in Berlin?
And last, it would make sense to demagnetise the heads, is there someone on e-m in Berlin willing to lend me his/her demag-tool (against, say a couple 1312)? That'd be great!
What else am i missing? Did i do something wrong? Thanks for any piece of advice!
