ChucK Virtual Machine Monitor Subject description: Stop Virtual Machine button and menu option inactive |
 |
|
Hello, I recently installed ChucK version 1.3.5.2 on Windows 7 Professional in a classroom where I teach computer music. Everything works great except that the Stop Virtual Machine button is inactive, as is the Stop Virtual Machine option in the ChucK menu. Also tried version 1.3.5.1 with the same result. Any thoughts on what could be causing this, or how to fix it? Thanks. |

I haven't used ChucK in years, but it is still on my XP PC (SP3). I think I am running 1.2.1.3 or 1.2.1.0 with miniAudicle 1.3. So, I am not an expert on ChucK by any means, but with renewed interest in Chuck on the forum here, I am beginning to at least see what I remember. I hope my exploration helps shed light on your problem.
So, I successfully ran ChucK and successfully ran probe.
miniAudicle booted OK and I was able to start the virtual machine. Next I tried to add some *.ck scripts [simple ones]. Eventually, I got a pop-up windows protection dialog. Sorry, I didn't grab a screen shot, so I am not sure which one it was. I chose the option to allow miniAudicle an viola--the script got added, I had shred running, and the hanoi demo successfully executed (as seen in the Console).
The shred in the vm have been running over 9 minutes; however, the "Stop Virtual Machine" button remains greyed out.
OK--I just added a new script. The button is still greyed out [running time > 17 minutes, with no scripts loaded or running].
It seems that the only way I could stop the VM was to close miniAudicle. However, as of yet, I have not been able to restart the VM, run a script, etc. I am not sure why. I do seem to remember (now that I am exploring again) that whenever I used miniAudicle I might have had to manually kill a process with Task Manager. I might try ChucK/miniAudicle on a newer OS.
Maybe someone else with more ChucK experience can explain what's going on with the Stop VM issue.

Steve (MusicMan11712),
My experience is consistent with yours and I have also been closing MiniAudicle to reset the Virtual Machine. I will take your suggestion and try different Windows Operating systems (working fine btw on Mac with El Capitan).
I have seen posts regarding a similar issue in Linux but none in Windows. At least I know now I am not the only one who has seen it in the Windows environment.
Thanks for taking a look,
Rick |

Yes, I can see the same thing. Subject description: Windows 10? |

Hi,
I confirm the same thing. From what I have found by googling the subject is that it has been a known issue on windows for some time (at least 6 months). I found this site: https://recordnotfound.com/chuck-ccrma-42076/issues
I am lucky to have both a Mac and a PC, so in a pinch I can run MiniAudicle on my Mac . I posted the issue in another forum and someone wrote me that he was not sure that MiniAudicle is fully supported on Windows 10? I don't know about windows 7.
You know what's funny is that I just noticed that Spell checker on this forum does not have a problem with the word "MiniAudicle". Ha!
