Hello everyone.

I've been playing around with synths and studio gear for a long time now and am lucky enough to have built up a fairly comprehensive studio. I make trance music and before the G2, my Virus was my favourite toy. All the same, I'm still missing the sound of the classic trance strings - that is bright and powerful, but without any digital harshness and a smooth and silky filter.
I have downloaded most of the strings sounds from here, but allthough some of them are truely amazing sounds, I feel that they suit softer kinds of music as they lack power.
I've also tried synthesizing my own - I've come close to what I want, but can't get it quite right. If there is any one that has such a patch, or knows where I can find some, please ket me know.

One other thing while I'm here, I thought (before I got my G2) that I would be able to make some some kick-ass drum sounds with its flexibility, but I'm having difficulty making or finding any... for instance, the 'on-board drum machine' is next to useless and when I try to make a kick drum using a sine wave, there is the 'random' click sound that messes it up (unless I sample it). So, any help with this problem would also be much appreciated. In particular, I'm after a whacky kind of percussion machine.

Many thank in advance,

Sheridan

Have a look at the patch I posted here:
http://www.electro-music.com/forum/topic-5661.html&highlight=trance

It's a kind of JP8000 supersaw. If you cut out the arpeggiators,
and clean up the envelopes, it could be what you're looking for.

For full on kick-drums, look in Mother Misty's patches (G-Lab
for instance). He's made a heavy hitting kick!

Greetz,

I havent checked The Why Projects patch he has recommended yet , but I agree. Something almost a bit on the Juno-106 side maybe but maybe not. The kind of hoover sound too would be nice but that should be quiet within reach. I dont know if that is part of what your looking for. So definitely on the synthetic strings side I gather?

In terms of Drum sounds, dont give up. I too was expecting amazing drums and actually am not disappointed yet. You wont find the more realistic high quality acoustic kit sounds though, just good kicks snares and in my opinion some great hats. It just takes time to dial them in.
I am very impressed with the drum abilities and I have like over 10 drum machines/modules. But its all relative, I am not sure what your looking for or like. As for the random click sound you speak of this is probably obvious and basic but are you sure your not using the 'click' parameter? As for random then I am not sure I know what you mean , unless you have something like velocity etc routed as well to trigger such things it could also seem random. Forgive me if I am way off there, just a tip. Maybe give some examples of what kinds of kicks or drum sounds your looking for in terms of actual drum machines ? I have yet to post any patches yet , I am just barely getting started , though I personally have found many cool drums on some performances etc, you can just edit them from there and tailor make them to be your own as well.
Good luck, I do share your frustration though on a certain level in getting those just so sounds in general of course let alone drums....

With low frequency sounds, you will get a random click caused by the envelope opening at a random point on the sine curve, use an oscillator with a sync input and patch it to the same trigger as the envelope. alternatively, another envelope with a fast decay which modulates the frequency of the sine will reduce the phase related randomness and give a nice beater noise on the attack.

The Why Project:

Thanks for the pointer to that lovely patch, but I already searched the forum for 'trance' before I posted and so already downloaded it. With a few modifications to the amp env and filters, it does come pretty close to what I'm after, but I'm looking for other similar alternatives now. Do you have any others? And do you also make trance, then?

Jason:

Thanks for the reply. Fancy sharing any of those drum patches that you're talking about? The click I was talking about, was from the sine osc, not the drum osc. If I knew of a drum machine that made the sounds I was after, I would buy it, but unfortunately I don't. I'm just after the kind of pounding (artificial) kicks that you here on most trance tunes.

G2ian:

Thanks for that tip about how to avoid the randomness of the click at the start of the sine wave... you can probably tell that I'm a bit of a 'modular-noob', despite years of synth editing. I do know to use an env with the osc pitch, but am interested to know if you (personally) use an additional osc to emphasize the (artificial) beater as I do?

I already have access to a couple of reasonable drum modules with which I can create resonable kicks, but they just don't sound like those on most trance tunes, even after compression, distortion, a touch of reverb, or whatever. I use two oscs, 1 for main kick and 1 for 'beater'. I've tried variations of filters, pitch env, pitch, etc. but they generally sound 'digital', like the two oscs similar harmonics are flanging or something... I tried phase reversing tham, but that doesn't help much. I'll get it one day, and I am close already, but any further tips/help would be great.

Many thanks,

Sheridan

I havn't tried that, could you post an example?

I am posting a string patch that I downloaded, cant remember from where, it was someone comparing the G2 to something else and he used this patch. It is quite simple but IMHO gives a very nice warm synthesiser string.

Thanks to your tip G2ian, I've managed to come up with a rather nice start for a kick drum patch. Didn't spend too long on it, so maybe i'll repost when i make some variations.

I hope u like it.

sheridan ->

Well first I like that kick you made. Pretty nice.
As far as my own patches I havent even been saving any, I just make them as I go. I havent made anything I deemed so cool yet to do so,
and dont get me wrong I am all about making my own patches.
Like you as well I have used lots of synths but am new to this modular world as it were. One patch I really dig playing with I am attaching. You probably already have it , but just in case-> It is by Omar Torres a very amazing musician IMO. I find this kick really nice as the hats show some of the potential available, though it probably isnt something you havent heard before. Also when I was using this I experimented of all things with a frequency shifter set to sub or low just for the kick and had some good results I was surprised with also. Keep up the good work! Oh and I will indeed post some more things that I actually make when I get more of a handle on this modular stuff.

Hi Sheridan,

when it comes to drums I really love the LFOShpA module at audio speed, it's really flexible!
Like Ian said the clicks are caused by the env opening at a random point in the waveform,
you need to sync it and the LFOshpA module has that sync option + an option to change
your phase, so you have a really good control over your 'click' with this module.
Another nice thing is that it has some nice waveforms besides sines which are great for
making "kick ass drum sounds" I've included a little drumpatch, with 5 variations, maybe
this can help...

I'm sure there are better/other ways, but I haven't really tried
since I've bought my machinedrum Smile

For some other examples maybe you can check some of roland kuit's stuff,
i've done several drumboxes too, but for some of them you'll need an expansion/G2X
Just check the patch archive and sort them by author.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Are there any more luscious string patches that aren't in the download section, or maybe any other drums? Has anybody seen any home made 'clap' patches here? I was thinking about how to come up with the 'vibrato like' effect at the start of the clap sound and realised that it would be no problem to implement with a (lovely) G2... a simple LFO (not sure whether a square or triangle waveform is better) who's output is controlled by a decay envelope should do the trick. Unfortunately, I won't have a chance to put this theory to the test until the WEEKEND!!! All the same, has anyone seen any ready made clap patches, or 'artificial' percussion, for that matter?

Many thanks to all again and please keep the trance-related patches rolling in!

808ish clap, adjust filter and noise colour to taste.

The noise source randomises the effect despite the two decay times being constant.

Also I wanted to point out and remind how the use of FM stuff can come into play here. I dont want to speak for you sheridan but perhaps its the more zappy kind of kick your looking for? I dont know. But I just thought I would mention that. I hope that makes some sense. Here is one I modified from a preset. It is far from complete I think though you may get the idea? Kind of what people call that LOG kick I gather?
My korg electribe mkII does this real well too.
I hope that helps some.......

Thanks again fellas. g2ian: I was after something with more control, but I have tried building on that patch and am kind of close to the sound i'm after, but no cigar yet! Maybe I'll post it back if I do get it.
Jason: Sorry, I may have done something wrong, but that FM patch didn't sound anything like a kick on my G2, more like a boingy... something or other!

Many thanks,

Sheridan

Sounds OK to me, Jason. I'm not a big drum person though. I don't like electronic music where the drums sound like real drum, unless there is a real drummer and all that, of course.

Yeah, sorry Jason, it was my mistake! When I don't have a Cubase loaded up, my MIDI patch bay sends the input (keyboard) signal to all of the outputs, so the 'boingy' sound I heard was actually a Virus sound playing over (and louder) than you drum sound. Embarassed
So thanks for that.

Oh and thanks for that good tip about using the LFO, Misty. Sorry I forgot to acknowledge your reply before. Much appreciated.

cool cool , Thanks mosc and sheridan for response -yes I like this topic -
I wonder though if we should be posting any of these patches on the patch list. Not sure. Not because they are good or not, but for organisation & so they arent scattered.?...

Well, there has been some critisicm that the forum is not spontaneous enough. These patches are appropriate to this topic, so why not post away? We'd all like to see things organized, but it's not the ultimate goal.

Me to I like this thread for being one of the few patch related topics on this forum that resulted in some discussion and other patches being posted. I'd like to see that happen more often.

This might be unusual on a forum, and be felt as breaking into someone else's thread, but I think we could use some socialism here :-)

But actually it's not that unstructured at all I think, as the patches are related and are vlose to each other.

Jan.

I don’t know anything about full on trance production, but here is a synth string patch with a lot of moving harmonics. Four oscillators with two lfo’s each for pwm and slight fm. Processed by a phaser then a pair of quad delay and standard chorus modules into a reverb. Sustained chords may induce motion sickness.
