Hi Bill. Nope, no April Fool joke.
Not your classic electro-music style event. Chelsea Smarr played harp+fx at the June 2015 conference/workshop, Andy you know (although I am not sure what he is doing -- something acoustic or acoustic-derived), Laura plays bagpipes and will demo and talk about full highland pipes, but will be playing a bagpipe synth -- and Miles, Dan & I are playing a straight-up acoustic set with them on guitar and me on banjo and taking turns singing. Ken Gehret was my banjo teacher in 1971-72 and taught my daughter and me fiddle in 1993-94, and is not only a multi-instrumentalist, but a multi-genre-player. I have heard him play Thelonius Monk on a dobro! He can jump in on anything, and will likely do that on many of our sets, in addition to playing his 60-minute set on various instruments. I'll do visuals on all but the DeCoster-Parson-Talley set. Phill Reed plans to do night-sky visuals for that.
One of the goals in writing a grant to pay Ken was to pull in more of the local area residents. Fiddle, banjo, and guitar picking is popular around here. Some of the performances will include electronics. I plan to play my electronic banjo+software in a final number with Ken. It should be somewhat musical-consciousness-raising for all involved.
Construction work on the building in summer 2017, so no chance for a repeat of the summer 2015 workshop yet. If I get a spring 2019 sabbatical that I have applied for, I'll likely target summer 2019 for something like that. I do hope to have an in-semester evening event in about a year, that would include a networked ZIM jam via Ninjam or similar, with electro-music participants. _________________ When the stream is deep

I remember Kutztown from the early '80s. I wish I had done my "Music, Meaning, & Human Communication" survey with my students back then as it would be interesting to re-do among the current population to see if the results would be any different. I did the original at the Uo'Wa in the late 70s, and then at IoWA (ISU), probably 3-4 years before I was at Kutztown. I have often wondered if there have been changes over time, and it would have been handy to have results from similar demographics (KzTown) spread apart by 30+ years.
I suppose if there had been time it might have been interesting to use a similar methodology as a before and after snapshot with the "Nobody's Fool" event. In any case the "Nobody's Fool" event sounds cool!!!!

Below are the recordings from last night's concert in the Kutztown University Planetarium. I am starting off with the most electro of the bunch, as opposed to in-original order. The concert was well attended and went very well.

Looks like a wonderful event. Sorry we missed it. 6 PM start time didn't work for us.
Thanks for posting all the recordings and the photos. It's almost the same as attending in person. Congrats of a great event. _________________ --Howard

Thanks, Howard. I hadn't played with Ken since 2004, and had seen him only a few times in the interim. We went out for beers after the show, and it turns out we have a lot in common. He plays a lot of local gigs during Berks Jazz Fest, including the Reading Museum's Planetarium. I invited their staff out to our first couple of Kutztown events, but they never responded to the emails. Anyway, he invited me to perform there with him, visuals and music, next time he plays, which may be April 2018, or maybe before. So, I may get a paying gig as a result of this concert.
Hope to see you after semester is over and Jeremy gets married in late May. I am up to 4 zero-input-mixers, would love to sit in on Chez Mosc some time this summer.
Incidentally, I am supposed to speak at the April 22 "March for Science" in Bethlehem, but the organizers haven't contacted two us from Kutztown yet, so hard to tell. One of the organizing group's members asked me. Watch for me on WFMZ. _________________ When the stream is deep
