CMOS Cookbook 2nd Ed. goes into digital sine generation p379-385.
Apparently the heavy paper was IEEE June 1969.
There's a table p383 going mathematically into the comparative volumes of the higher harmonics.
Most of the text is ring counter generation rather than counter+xor.

The counter+xor is also the generator in the Walton Graphic Oscillator.

Perhaps the idea from Don is:

i just drew a pcb layout for 4 square to shine shapers ,those with 4015 from earlier ,wasn't sure about the supply i just added a regulator to the board ,the idea for this is to use them with the cross product module from electronotes and mix 4 shaper sinewave outputs instead of the squares from 7408 ,it's little rough but i just avoid making it double sided
