How did you meet ChucK

than the strongly time based audio programming language...as doing staff with time. so now I am NewBe with it.

Saw the TED talk a few months ago. Coming from a programming world with a little music from High School (played drums and bass, but never really good, am 30 yeas old now...), am a HID 'hacker' in the sense that I have been modifying my own game controllers for years for games and dabbled in robotics too. When I saw the HID examples in the TED talk I was totally stoked. Been playing around with chuck for a few months now. I bought a Harmonix drum set for the game Rock Band today at a thrift store for $5 and already have it mostly programmed, now dreaming up new things to do with it. It seems like I have wanted this language to exist for years. When I was learning music in High School I always felt out of my element, musicians tend to be elitist (no THIS is how you tune the guitar, mannn) but with this stuff I feel in control, I totally dig the freedom it allows. Plus now I am the elitist since I have a good base in programming and HID.

Having learned to code many many moons ago in C++, using this interface seems like it will be very easy to pick up! I confess my motive for taking the course now is due to a future class I want to take that looks really fun! It's a class on on composition using an "Electronic Prepared Piano".. which caught my interest when I read its course description! In any case, one of its listed pre-requisites is familiarity with ChucK - and the Instructor pointed all interested enrollee's to this class:

I've goofed around with the FV-1 several years and wrote a software tool for making patches using graphical blocks instead of writing code. After awhile I got a little frustrated with the FV-1's limitations and got a Bela.

Then I began to read all sorts of stuff about general purpose DSP and somehow stumbled across Stk, the Synthesis Tool Kit upon which some aspects of Chuck are based (the uGens). Turns out I worked for a brief period of time at a company with Perry Cook 25 years ago.

Then I looked at Perry's web site where there was an announcement for the Kadenze class on Physical Models for synthesis. All of the assignments here use Chuck although the focus is on the synthesis rather than Chuck itself.

I play "real" instruments and I have done some composing using a DAW but my mindset does not allow me that level of concentration any more (something to do with having kids). I've also done some live looping and within the past year also got into modular synths as a result of my collaboration with the guys at Erica Synths in Latvia.

I'm thinking that Chuck might allow me to to develop a personalized performance environment where I can combine bits and pieces of thematic material and select them on the fly using MIDI or Wiimote. Also combining step sequencing from a Beatstep Pro connected to my little modular setup. And finally playing guitar on top of it all.

I don't remember how I learned about the existence of ChucK. Probably saw it while going through Gentoo ebuilds and looked it up. It's been on my to-do list to start learning it for a couple to a few years. A recently knee injury preventing me from using stairs - and therefore my studio - prompted me to start playing with it on a laptop.

Still a n00b as of the time of this post. Messing with the very basics, nesting Impulse ugens and stuff like that. Fun stuff. Smile

First encountered ChucK in late 2016 through the Kadenze course. I was laid off from my job not more than 3 months later; now I'm a computer science student at SUNY Brockport, and just did a paper on ChucK for an upper level comparative programming languages course! I'm hoping at some point to be able to contribute to the ChucK code base; it would be good to have a "spoon" method for sporking with a gentler fade in/fade out. Also, MIDI 2.0 is here, and 48 bit controller changes would be great to implement as soon as I get a compatible controller.

(Incidentally, are black shirts and orange neckties obligatory for ChucK developers?)

I found ChucK in a thread from 2008 at Cycling74. It's a pleasure.
