I've been gradually trawling through the DIY Hardware and Software forum and I'm now on page 38 Smile

This post: https://electro-music.com/forum/topic-46238.html has a number of circuits for modulators built from diode connected valves. Check down the post to the scans posted by AndrewF. Replace the diode connected valves with silicon diodes and the correct for split power supplies and they look Lunetta suitable. The half-wave diode-switch modulator looks like it would work as a 2 diode VCA although it would never quite silence the signal.
