Synth/circuits/noise/photography Freak Says Hello! Subject description: Introduction |
|
|
Greetings fellow artists. I'm more of a tech than a musician, but have been making noise for a very long time.
One Christmas when I was a kid, I got an Archer Electronics Lab, and built all projects that made noise. Later I had a borrowed PAIA synth when I was a teen, and built my first noise generator based on the SN76477 Complex Sound Generator IC in college as my first lab project. I've worked in two music shops doing instrument repairs but am currently doing industrial electronic repairs, mainly analog controls and laser sensors, dealing with automation.
Since I make my living repairing some fairly boring stuff, I have renewed my past joy in building and experimenting with noise generators and semi-melodic noise boxes. It is very satisfying to me to plug a circuit board into an amp and hear bizarre sounds! I also have a treasure trove of scrap parts at my disposal!
Musically, I am a guitarist. The noise generators are for when I want to do something unusual. I do not record.
In addition to the SN76477, I've done several projects on op-amp oscillators and have a desire to experiment with 4093 oscillators. I've recently discovered Ray Wilson's fabulous designs and knew about Thomas Henry's work, but never built any of it.
I'm also a fan of designs by The Electronic Peasant. Doug's Thunder Wave percussion synth is truly original and inspiring!
Oh, and I'm a photographer, specialized in the now very obsolete Kodak HIE infrared film, which I have in my freezer. I have a large collection of K-mount SLRs and lenses (PENTAX!!!). I'm also shooting digital with my wonderful Nikon D800 and my smartphone, a Samsung A51. I spend a lot of time shooting in cemeteries and haunted locations.
So, I'll see what everyone else is doing. I may look in on the repairs forum and see if I can help anybody. Thanks for reading and say hello if you feel so inspired.

Hi Jimmy,
Nice to see I'm not alone in Winston Salem. Besides a musician, i am also a photographer. On the recording music, why not?
