Hello everyone! I just bought a new 12" ibook from Apple to record my music on, and was wondering what a good DAW to get. I was thinking of picking up a used copy of digital performer 4.12 off of ebay, but I'm open to suggestions. Something that works well with Kontakt, and doesn't eat up the cpu or ram. Thanks!

If you want DP you should get an ugradeable version. Have you ever considered Logic Express? It even comes with it´s own sampler.

Nope.. it doesn´t.

The amusing thing is that Logic Pro 7 is one of the best deals around. Even more amusing is the fact that you get "almost" all the pro features in Logic Express and this is much more than the full 6 version offered anyway.

How good is the sampler that comes with express 7? Does it have decent sound shaping capabilities?

there's no sampler in the express version and also you don't have Sculpture and Ultrabeat.

Sculpture:

If you get a MOTU audio interface, you'll probably get AudioDesk 2 for free, and if you like AudioDesk 2, then DP would be the way to go

On the other hand, your new iBook should come with GarageBand (as part of iLife) and if you like that, then the Logic route would be the way to go.

Just try whatever free DAW comes with the iBook and/or equipment you'll probably need to buy to complete your home studio setup and that will indicate your next step.
