"According to a deep throat in Apple, who was chatting to ZDNet, Firewire's execution date is set, despite no one in the company talking about it"

I think he means USB2.0 is about to be un-supported

Can't we all just switch to Gig-ethernet for everything?

How Fast Does A USB 2.0 Drive Go On The Newest Macs? How Does It Compare To FireWire?

That is an interesting article. Good thing that people like this are around to keep things honest.

I was thinking that this may be a very clever marketing thing that Apple is doing. All this unofficial talk about Apple dropping Firewire might pay off big when the new Intel PowerBooks come out with Firewire support. Everyone will say it's great, whereas before it would be just expected.

i'm not really a mac user (although i have a few 8100's around), but dropping firewire would be a big problem i think. mostly, because the mini dv format is so closely tied with firewire. if there were no way to capture dv frame by frame on a new mac, then it would be useless for a large part of the mac user base.

Some of these rumours have been around for ages. If it is a sign of thing to come, Apple ditched Firewire completely for the new iPods. Another matter is that there is no reason for keeping FW400. FW800 is the way to go and these are compatible with FW400 devices anyway ( if you have the right cable).
