The Continuum Fingerboard |
|
|
The Continuum Fingerboard is a new MIDI controller
that allows continuous control over each note in a performance.
http://www.hakenaudio.com/Continuum/
It resembles a traditional MIDI keyboard
in that it is approximately the same size
and is played with ten fingers.
It also resembles a fretless string instrument
in that it does not have discrete pitches.
Any pitch may be played. Vibrato and smooth glissandi are possible.
Finger pressure controls dynamics.
The front-to-back position of each finger affects timbre.
Compatible with MIDI synthesizers
and Symbolic Sound Corporation’s Kyma Sound Design Workstation.
Includes traditional MIDI In/Out/Through as well as IEEE 1394 FireWire.
Be sure to click through and see the demo movies and listen to the mp3s. http://www.hakenaudio.com/Continuum/Movies/ |

Yes. I wrote them for a price. Must be expensive if they don't advertise it. Maybe this instead of the G2? Beats the Theremin, IMHO. |

Yikes! The price is $3390 for the half size, $5290 for the full size. |

There perhaps are still pieces of equipment that it makes sense for an academic institution to get to entice students to study there. There aren't many anymore. |

just in case you don't know.........
Quote: | There is a magic number in western music, known as the twelfth root of two, and it has a value of approximately 1.0595. Â This is the number that, when multiplied by itself twelve times, gives a result of two.
Why is this important to music?

The pluck sound that he uses is amazingly life-like. Must be nice having a Kyma system as your sound module.
Edmund's choice of studio name is a bit ironic, considering the Continuum's stated purpose is to allow keyboardists to play outside of 12-tone equal temperament (the dominant tuning of today's music), albeit its function in microtonal music is quite different than other keyboards I've seen that are designed for microtonal music. The former for expressive leads, the latter for precise chordal playing. |

Right in the price range of a cello, but probably a LOT easier to play (don't have to worry about that pesky bow). |

Saw Jordan Rudess (of Dream Theater) playing one of these earlier in the year and was very impressed. It was very expressive indeed.
Shame about the price tag though _________________ Jez
