This is a photo of a system I built (speakers - not electronics) about 1981.
It created synthetic ambience using 12 digital reverb/delay lines ( which had just become available) which fed the speakers that are in the pods hanging from the ceiling. You can't see all the pods in the picture. There were five on each side and one in front of the sweet spot and one behind it.

I love that system and decor:) It makes me want get Mr. Scott to beam me straight in under a speaker, flares flapping and cocktail in hand ready for the party with all the records played being suitably remastered quad, played either from 15ips open reel or futuristic micro cassette. Switch to transporter circuit D and energise!
