Ever wondered how well a piece of meat can conduct audio signals? Here is a nice video of the meat being used as a mixer. Enjoy!

Hehe, what an interesting initial reaction. I thought it was quite a nice experiment, but definately should just stay in the realms of an experiment. I don't think meat will be improving our amplifiers any time soon!

The meat was probably an animal before it got killed. I don't object having animals for food, but some respect is in place. I'm having difficulty seing such respect in the movie, and in that sense I have to agree with Carlo - disgusting.

Animals have always been used as musical instruments, in the form of drumskins, strings, horsehair bows, bone flutes, bags, bladders and probably a ton of other parts and uses I cannot think of offhand. The meat mixer shown here could be seen as a (tongue in cheek) attempt to integrate the souls of departed animals with the latest generation of musical instruments, the inanimate electronic machines. Consider it a satirical reflection on the thoughtless treatment of animals in modern society, or a comment on the inhuman sound of modern electronic instruments, if you prefer to phrase it in these ways.

Respect is a rather personal matter, and of course you are entitled to your opinion. Is an instrument made from an animal is less disgusting, or more respectful, if a serious piece of music is created from it? Perhaps it is the participants place to decide whether appropriate respect was shown for the meat or not. We at Magpie Industries nod our heads and are thankful to the poor cow for the incredible fun, sense of adventure and feeling of scientific discovery we received from a piece of its ass. It filled us with delight and childlike glee. It is perhaps unfortunate that the video doesn't show the complete experiments, nor what happened to the meat afterwards (we ate it).

As long as you eat it, I'm OK with it, but it is litereally playing with your food. I eat meat but I also think Blue Hell has a point about respecting the life of the animal that was killed.

At Magpie Industries, the creation of a new instrument is a communal ceremony, and a celebration of life. The soul of the instrument is often prayed for. The sacrifices required to bring about the creation of a new musical instrument is respected, admired and cherished. The cycle of creation and destruction is acknowledged, awed, celebrated and feared, whether it be a childs discarded toy being born again as a glitched up bentstrument, or a dead cow being transformed into a meaty mixer. We laugh in a celebration of this change and transformation from old into new, feel a sorrow for what once was, and feel a deep sense of peace and joy to be a part of the becoming.

Haha, I believe you at Magpie Industries believe in trying to justify your actions with a load of hebetudinous waffle! Very Happy

Not trying to detract from your experiments, but you really sounded rather strange in trying to justify yourself. Cool

I think it is a pretty adminable mission statement - well thought out and well written.

Interesting discussion for a synth forum.
Being a nature lover the first thought that came to me was for the poor animal being abused for such an experiment. But it´s true, not only is the world like that, when i play my big wooden instrument i´m actually playing on somewones gut.
Now isn´t that discusting?

Ok, I had not picked that up from the movie tho :-)

Yes, I'll not judge you, it was all IMHO.

Re. using bones and bladder etc for musical instruments, I'd like to think such use was not the primary reason to kill the animal. But as you ate the meat afterwards (something I would not have expected, and maybe it should be shown in the video), the difference is not as big as I thought it would be.

uuhhhh i think im with macaba there, but, if you consider the soul of the animal, the meat is nothing. it is significant only as a foodsource. still, i wouldn't want to make a drum, or a dinner, out of grandma's head!
