I'm interesting is it possible to do that. I imagine it like this:
We take digital audio stream getting into DAC and convert it to SPDIF, using a microcontroller or may be there is a special chip for that purpose.

Open up the NM and see what type of DACs they use -- I think I remember CS (Crystal Sound made by cirrus logic). Most of these interfaces are based on a "I2S" standard, but mileage may vary, so look up the exact DAC used, and the manufacturer most likely makes a SPDIF/AES-EBU version very much like it. Cirrus logic makes a CS84xx series part, which takes I2S and converts it to SPDIF. They come in SOIC packages, which is surface mount, but (IMO) easily "dead bugable" (flip them over and solder directly to pins).

I am considering something for the G2, but handling the 4 channels of in & out on the data lines requires a bit more logic & optical connection. 2 might be enough though...
