Beginners guide to electronics? Subject description: I want to build my own synth/tone generator... |
 |
|
Hi,
I am interested in building my own electronic instruments and have no idea as to what I should do. I will need to learn some basic electronics and find good sites/books that can help me with this process.
I have thought about using guitar pick-ups, contact mics and VCO's as a starting point but have no idea how to make this really work. I would also like to tear old electronic equipment of mine into pieces and salvage connectors, circuit boards and dials etc.
Can anyone offer any guidance on this subject? Does anyone know of a quality resource on this area of electronics?
Any assistance is greatly appreciated:)

'Electronic Projects for Musicians' by Craig Anderton... is a book that should help you build some basic projects.
http://paia.com/PAIA/ is a place where you can order the book's projects in kit form.
Good luck! _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

Agreed! This is an excellent book that gives a lot of great projects and explains a lot about them. Couple that with the kits from Paia and you're on to a winner -- get the book get the book! _________________ http://www.bugbrand.co.uk

Or a WSG,
by the time you get one of those happening, you'll have the start of a decent toolkit, and enough component recognition to give you extra confidence to take on something bigger. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

I agree. My WSG was the first thing I ever built, and the first time I ever used a soldering iron. A real confidence booster and learning experience! _________________ One Player Game | OPG on SoundCloud |

Sorry Moom,
The WSG is the Whacky Sound Generator which Ray Wilson came up with: -
http://www.musicfromouterspace.com/analogsynth/YOUR_FIRST_SYNTH/YOUR_FIRST_SYNTH.html
It's not very musical (debatable) but it's lots of fun, and a good way for a complete beginner to get started with DIY synths.
You only need a soldering iron and about AUS$20 worth of other parts to get some weird sounds pounding through your stereo. _________________ What makes a space ours, is what we put there, and what we do there. |

A few people have advised that site for the learning curve aswell.
All help has been greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
