Hi ChucKists,

I'm a student of computer science at a university in Germany. At the moment I'm writing a term paper about ChucK and I will give a speech about it in the middle of december.

The problem is that I can't find any information about why this programming language was called "Chuck" and how the early beginnings of the developing process looked like. Whose idea was it and when did he or she start?

May you help please me and tell me where I can get these pieces of information or who to contact.

Thank you.

greetings,
i have been doing a lot of reading about chuck. i can tell you that chuck is named after the chuck operator. "=>"
chuck is referring to throwing some object to/at another another object.

fictional example

baseball => catcher
read as
baseball chuck(ed) to catcher

i really don't know about the origins of the language other than it being influenced by java and C++.
sorry i cant be of more help but im just getting into chuck myself.

I think the idea is Ge's (or maybe Ge and Perry?) the basic idea is research into code as a musically expressive medium but it's also meant to be especially suitable for eduction. Not at all sure about the origin.

The guy to contact is gewang -at- cs -dot- princeton -dot- edu but he also reads and posts on this board. Ge is very friendly and helpfull with questions but lately he's been very bussy with teaching and replies may get a delay.

ChucK uses the STK by Perry Cook and Gary Scavone which is a toolkit for synthesising sounds as well as a teaching tool and focuses on physical modeling. I think Ge studied (studies?) under Cook.

There are some research papers on ChucK and related matters (like the Audicle) on the Princeton ChucK site that may be of interest but I don't think any of them explain the real beginning of the idea, it would be quite interesting to know this.

Will your paper be public once it's done? I'd like to read it, also I strongly feel your paper should include at least one photograph of Ge wearing his ceremonial hat. http://toplap.org/forums.html/Image:Toplap_group.jpg

Good luck!

Thanks for your help.

My paper will be free for anyone to read. However, it will be just a short introduction to ChucK (probably in the form of a tutorial) meant for people who know a bit about programming languages but not too much.
I think the main problem for you is that it will be in German. Nevertheless if you'll like to read it, you'll be welcome.
