JH, while I am interested in a Frequency shifter, the calibration procedure does bother me a bit. As someone who doesn't own a scope I'm not sure how difficult it would be to get this thing sounding right without one.

A little heads up on my "purchasing" thoughts while I'm here. Generally when looking at projects to do I have a look to see if I can understand how to wire things (I don't like wire much) and whether or not the parts are very difficult to get. But in this case I'm pondering the technical difficulty of getting these settings right.

If there was a way to tune this thing easily by listening to output / analysis via a pc/ soundcard / with a meter or even against a set of recordings then I'd be more prone to saying "Send me one!" Wink

As much as I would like to encourage you (and sell you a set of boards), I'm afraid I cannot.

It *may* be possible to adjust this even without a scope - by someone who has years of experience _with_ a scope, and find clever workarounds to work without one on the proverbial desert island.

But it would be unfair of me to talk anyone into buying this when I expect trouble.

For this project, you don't have to _own_ a scope, but you need acess to one, and either have the experience yourself, of benefit from the experience of the one who lends you his scope.

The cheapest single-channel 10MHz scope will do, BTW.

JH.

Orders are coming in, more than I expected, given the rather difficult nature of this project!

I think I can already say: yes, it's a go.

It will take some time before I'm ordering the PCBs, nevertheless.
I want to build a proper prototype with enclosure and Schaeffer panel first, rather than making a complete test with just the boards and alligator clips.

Meanwhile, keep your orders coming. Smile

Made some tests with the two boards fixed on a piece of plywood, and everything connected. Apparently everything works as intended!

I already have enough orders to let this project happen. I'm still accepting orders until the end of this month. If everything goes as intended, I'll have the boards by the end of next month!

UPDATE

I've placed the order at the PCB house today!
Will take about 3 weeks till I get the boards, then I have to build another prototype to check if everything is fine.
I'll send invoices around mid April.

Cool Great Album.

Have you heard "Rites" ? There are lovely electro/sampled percussion rhythms on CD1 tracks 1 and 5. Pure, clean and cold beauty. Very Happy

cheers,
Dave

Boards arrived today.
But I'll build another prototype first, from the boards of the production run, to make sure everything is fine, before I send out invoices.
Will take a coule of weeks.

I have more boards than pre-orders, so it's still possible to order FS-1a PCB sets.
Please send an email order form like I posted earlier in this thread, if interested.

JH.

Yes - great stuff, like most Garbarek.
Even though everything from him sounds similar, in a certain way.

So...
how do we calculate the parts for the AP section (Cap, Rap) on board #2?

Thanks for the wisdom,

For the dome filter, there's a spreadsheet on my FS-1a page:
http://www.jhaible.heim.at/fs1a/fs1a.html
(direct link: http://www.jhaible.heim.at/fs1a/jh_dome_filter_example.xls )

But you mean the extra all pass section.

Well, it's an addition to the frequency shifter, to change the basic sound of phasing in Barberpole Phaser mode. There is nothing such an "optimal" sound here, so you have a lot of degrees of freedom to experiment.
This ist to say, you can't go wrong here, how ever you choose the R's and C's in that section (within reasonable bounds).
I've built my prototype with 10k and 15n (for all 6 stages).

JH.

Btw, do you know how much current the frequency shifter eats?

(Since you've incorporated some PSU stuff on one of the boards, maybe you've already checked this out) Smile

Ha, it's harder to measure the DC current, because it's hard wired to the on-board PSU, but I could measure the AC current or power consumption ...

It's all just a few Watts anyway, probably less than the smallest wallwart will provide - but you need heat sinks on the regulators.
