I live about 1/2 hour away. I went to school there about 10 years ago. Seeing as how I have never been to Electro music, met any of you or know anything about it, I would have to get some extensive "briefing" before I could describe the event to anyone at the campus or ask if they were interested.

I could make an initial contact I spose!! I just wouldn't know what to say to them except "Uh... it's a gathering of nerdy musicians who like to play with synthesizers and other Tech-y gizmos." Laughing

Is the word "nerd" considered offensive now? I don't think so. I'm flattered when my daughter calls me one. Very Happy

Anyway, if they showed any interest, I would then have to refer them to YOU. Rolling Eyes

And the time period is what... Friday evening to Sunday morning? Some weekend in the early summer?

http://event.electro-music.com/ has schedule links on the upper left. Friday typicaly starts at noon, so setup usually begins Friday AM. Just get a load of those 3 schedule pages!!! Every day is noon to midnight, nonstop! It's a gas Very Happy

There's a poll on the electro-music 2008 thread:

I am sure we can be flexible on this. Also, an Internet connection for streaming the performances out is important.

It should be on a weekend (Fri-Sun) - 3 full days (at least noon to midnight).
And really it's best if the venue can fit up to 200 people (as we've been growing each year).
The dates are open at this point. It's probably already too late to do it in early June.

There is a place near Plymouth Meeting PA called the Lu Lu Temple.

http://www.lulushriners.org/rental.htm

It's a Shriners place and I've been to several events there...
cat show, fossil show, SCA event.

Basically it has 2 large rooms and a lobby. One of the rooms has a kitchen. The lobby could be the "dealers' room". I don't know if there are any other rooms or not. But I know it definitely holds 200 people.

Want me to contact them or is it too small?

One place I was looking into, Swarthmore, is no good. They shut down for the summer. Now I'm working on a contact I have at Drexel U.

Thanks for the updates. Too bad about Swarthmore. It's pretty prestigious.

r5 Productions is pretty much the king of independant pop music in Philadelphia: http://r5productions.com/ They would be able to let you know whats available, and they're generally pretty cool people. They might be able to help or at least poing you in the right direction. I kinda know one of the people who does work for them.

In center city they book a basement in a church that is fairly large, but only one room. In North Philly they book a gigantic space, but its again only one room.

West Philly has a lot of spaces. I don't think any on their own fit what you need, but many are close to each other and could possibly accomodate in tandem. Examples could be the International House and the Rotunda. Or Drexel's student center and world cafe live.

North Philly (Northern Liberties and Fishtown specifically) has a lot of warehouses and spaces converted into venues. The Crane Arts Building immediately comes to mind. Its multiple rooms, includes a large outside area for mingling/food or the stuff, and is into the stuff going on for EM.

Sorry I jumped into this a little late, but I hope that helps at least a little.

What did you think of my suggestions? (Ursinus, Villanova, Montgomery county community college.)

I called the Montgo college and she sent me several letters about their facility use policy. I can forward them to you if you like.

Well Kingsport, TN is hardly close to Philly, but there is a facility here that is fantastic for such an event. It's an old school that has been renovated, and it is absolutely wonderful. The Renaissance Center has a wonderful stage (and a PA system) that can seat about 350. There are many large rooms for other events as well. It has plenty of parking, an elevator, and AIR CONDITIONING throughout. There's plenty of inexpensive motels, and one even has an 18-hole golf course.

Rooms are about $20 an hour, but perhaps there could be reduced rate for full days. But, then again, this is Tenn. and not Philly. Maybe nobody from the Northeast would want to attend.

Looks superb, Marc. If you would, please see if they would give a reduced rate for 3 days. You know what we would like. I'd think there would be fewer attendees in Tennessee than in Philly, but we could still have a great event.

If you do invest the time in investigating this, please respond not here in public, but send me a PM or something.

Thanks,

That;s for sure.
I was so looking forward to meeting you all. Mad Crying or Very sad

I still think there are lots of places like upscale high schools in the philly burbs. I spose anymore they are all concerned with insurance, liability etc.

Alternatively you could even think about raising your admission. I don't even know what it was before but that might be a better solution than having it where hardly anyone would come.

Well, we wanted to keep the prices low so we would get more people to attend. A unique thing about our events is that everyone pays for a ticket, including the participants/performers.

Any thoughts on why we seem to be getting a cold shoulder from venues? The couple that I have tried in Berks County haven't even bothered responding, and they seem like establishments that should be interested in innovative musical work.

You might not get all the Philly people, but you would attract a lot of Southern attendees. Atlanta, Charlotte, and Nashville are only 4-5 hours away. Asheville, home of Moog Music, is 1.5 hours away. Knoxville is 2 hours away.

Compared to Philly, there is hardly any traffic. Motels are plentiful and are 10 or less minutes away, as are restaurants. It's extremely safe, and there's stuff for spouses to do. Plenty of camping and the Great Smoky National Park is about 1.5 hours away.

This is the home of country music. The Carter Family Fold is here. NASCAR fans will appreciate Bristol Speedway.

I can probably rouse up newspaper, tv, and radio pre-coverage.

Everybody is very uptight about Liability and Insurance I think.

I still think there are some high schools that would be great, such as Plymouth Whitemarsh that used to host the Heritage Dance Festival. Suburban high schools have auditoriums and lots of large spaces.

But I bet they would be too afraid of lawsuits or who knows what.

I'm checking out a couple more Philly locations.

#1) Saturday night I looked at a space in my West Philly neighborhood, called Studio34; opening soon as a yoga / healing arts space. See http://www.studio34yoga.com It's a big loft-like space on the second floor and they are keen on opening it up to all kinds of activities.

Surprisingly large. The layout is good but smaller overall than CAC. One very large room, bigger I think than the large gallery at CAC, one smaller but still a good size, about three or four quite small rooms and a great lobby, hanging out space. I think we could come up with a way to make it work and I think it would be very cheap compared to anything you might get from a college. They liked the idea of hosting us.

parking is not awful (there's a free city lot two blocks away and street parking is free). You'll be safe but don't leave stuff in your car. Being on the 2nd floor is not ideal but there is a way in by ramp at the rear (a wide, steep ramp, okay to pull a hand truck up but not wheelchair friendly at all). It's on a trolley line (10 min from downtown), there's pizza downstairs, coffee, micro brewery, Laotian, Vietnamese, Ethiopian all within a few blocks). There's an open house on 3/28 if anybody wants to look.

#2) This next one's an interesting match up but I haven't seen the space yet. It's http://thehacktory.org/ and their very mission is to "promote the use of technology in the arts." That's us! I spoke to one of the key people today in the midst of something else and we didn't get to talk much but I'll try to check out the space soon.

That's great, Greg! I think people will like it here. The facility is gorgeous, and the price of food, gas, and lodging is significantly cheaper than Philly. Traffic is non-existent when compared to Cheltenham, and there is plenty to do and see for spouses. I'm hoping we can draw some participants from the Southeast.
