Does homemade gear count as new gear? Sure it does!

Pictured below is my setup minus the, um, new gear which is on the other table. You can, however, see the jittery waveform of a Theremin wiggling it's all get-out at 25 kHz on the scope. The Theremin will eventually get mounted on the guitar so I can wave my hand over it and create effects that way.

Some gear-head items to note: eMac to the left running ChucK guitar processing software that I wrote, Squire Strat with custom-routed handle and chainmaille strap plus gravity/acceleration sensor, osillyscope with custom 1/4" plug to BNC cable for viewing guitar waveforms, and rockin' Fender Frontman 15G amp.

I hope to get a Y-cable someday soon so that I can have the scope monitor the audio at all times, but for now it's keeping an eye on the Theremin prototype.

OK, I took a photo of the new gear itself, it's a wee little circuit in the center of a big breadboard with a rusty copper-clad antenna on the lower right. The right coiled wire connects the antenna to the circuit and the left coiled wire connects the scope probe to the output signal for monitoring.

I get a sensitivity distance of about four to six inches maximum which ain't great but is sufficient for a guitar-mounted Theremin. The output is a 25 kHz square(ish) wave from a relaxation oscillator (ahhh, how relaxing) that winds down to 15 kHz or so when your hand gets really close to it.

The current issue is that the frequency of the waveform is way too high for the USB interface that will receive it, so I might divide it down or else do a frequency to voltage conversion which would be complicated but doable. I dunno, I'm just playing around with it for now. Anyone have any suggestions for a CMOS counter chip to divide down the signal by 256 or preferably more (yes I am lazy enough to ask).

Juicing up guitars with homebrew circuitry, what fun!

Just in case you were really bored (or even interested), here is a block diagram of the setup. Groovy, eh?

I've only had the kit for less than 24 hours. Never had anything like this before, only a steel stringed acoustic.

For me, the VG is exactly what the doctor ordered Very Happy It was in fact what pushed me to finally go for that guitar I've always wanted. There's no way I could/would stack up amps and cabinets, and to my ears the VG sounds very good so far. Maybe not like real cabinets and stuff, but I don't have that reference and so I'm more than happy. It seems to have endless possibilities. To you tell the truth I'm totally stoked!!!

I must get the GK-3 hex pickup mounted, that's half the point of the VG of course - just need to gather enough courage to take off the strings and the bridge...

Hmmm... why don't we have a guitar sub forum Question
Perhaps there are good reasons...

There do seem to be enough posts to create a reasonably active guitar sub-forum.

You definitely need the 13 pin connection for the VG99 to really shine, you need to get one ASAP.

Fitting the pickup is not too bad as long as everything fits that is.

For the bridge you have the LP bracket the pickup comes with will probably work fine, otherwise you are going to need to stick it or screw it just in front of the bridge. The actual control unit should attach to your strap screw as long as it is positioned properly.

You can also get internal pickup kits and get someone in the know to fit it for a much neater appearance.

I must admit I haven't been using my VG-99 very much it is looking forlorn and dusty in the corner, I used my VG-88 loads but I don't play live anymore so I tend to use Waves Gtr as the Amps and cabinets sound better. For a live tool though the VGs are fantastic.

We definitely need a guitar sub-forum I think.

Not on a banjo head! Out of four banjos, one has enough clearance between the head and strings, and the correct string spacing, to accept a GK-3. But, how to attach it? Double-backed tape is not likely to last long.

I had a pick-up-the-world analog pickup on the back of a banjo head for a while -- designed specifically for banjo -- and it just vibrated apart.

This helped get me into acoustic signal processing for the banjo, and I have pretty much decided to forego MIDI-on-banjo for the foreseeable future. have been playing my MIDI guitar through MIDIME the last few days, though, after a longish hiatus.[

A GK-3 on a Banjo, I would love to see that!

I reckon you'd have to have one built - without the drum skin thingy. Or maybe bastardise one of the ones you have (although I can understand how that might be more than harrowing).
A solidbody banjo, if you like. Oxy? Moron? Me? Your call! Cool

Mosc has got one of these. Nechvill also makes one like you describe. Playing Mosc's in 2005 when Jeremy and I visited him to see his synths and demo some of our banjo+bass duets helped to get me started in this stuff. I played his MIDI banjo for a couple of hours of jam session time at E-M 2007 (thanks, Mosc).

If I had the extra funds I'd consider springing for one, but I really like what I am able to do with softward delays and other FXs that are driven by my acoustic picking. I have a long way to go in exploring that space, and right now in my new college teaching gig, little time to do so. It is a fun little banjo to play.

Well, I would go along with that; I LUV arsing around with MIDI stuff, but my brain seems to prefer arsing around with real instruments, THEN mangling them with delays, distortions and modulation effects, my personal favourite being the good old-fashioned tremolo (amplitude - not pitch).

Oh, and my heart concurs!

Dale, are you typing the URLs yourself? If so, would you please add 'target="_blank"' after the href bit? That would make them work the same as the bbcode tags and other auto generated links.

If you have time, could you edit my post and do this so I can look at the syntax and make sure I have it correct? Thanks!

That gets me thinking. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency want to build a submersible airplane so maybe a Guitar-Sub Forum?

Can I do it as <a href="http://www.example.com target="_blank">the link text</a> instead?

Oh wait I made a tutorial not too long ago ... here
