Here are some Expedia.com prices:
http://www.expedia.com/Hotels?action=hotelPackageWizard@searchHotelOnly&packageType=HOTEL_ONLY&hotelPackageWizard_hotelPackageWizardControl_hotelWidgetControl_hotelSearchRegionControl_hotelRegionTypeControl_inpRegionType=CITY&hotelPackageWizard_hotelPackageWizardControl_hotelWidgetControl_hotelSearchRegionControl_cityControl_inpCity=Kingsport%2C+TN&hotelPackageWizard_hotelPackageWizardControl_hotelWidgetControl_dateRangeWidget_inpStartDate=8/14/2008&hotelPackageWizard_hotelPackageWizardControl_hotelWidgetControl_dateRangeWidget_inpEndDate=8/17/2008&hotelPackageWizard_hotelPackageWizardControl_hotelWidgetControl_roomInputWidget_hotelRoomCountInput=1&hotelPackageWizard_hotelPackageWizardControl_hotelWidgetControl_roomInputWidget_adultCountInput=2&hotelPackageWizard_hotelPackageWizardControl_hotelWidgetControl_roomInputWidget_childCountInput=0&isAdditionOptionExist=0&rfrr=-905
Some of the prices seem a tad better. The Super 8 near the airport is only $61, but you will be traveling about 10-12 miles to the venue. LaQuinta is close to this motel.
The other Super 8 is close to the venue. It has recently been remodeled, but it used to be run down. I think I would still avoid it.
If it was me, I would go for the Jameson Inn. It's a bit more money, but close to the Intestate, very close, and a straight shot to the venue. Maybe 2-3 miles to the venue.
The Marriott Meadowview is great. It's hard to believe you can book it for only $99 a night. In other cities it would probably be $150+. It also has a nice 18 hole golf course.
The Best Western is your basic motel. It's 5-7 miles from the venue, and close to the Interstate, and there are plenty of restaurants. It's about 10-12 years old.
Let me know if you want to go for a group rate. The Quality Inn should be pretty good. Lots of restaurants and not too far from the venue. _________________ Mark Mahoney

How do people get from the hotel to the center? Someone mentioned they
assume taxi service. There are taxis at tri-cities airport that is true.
But are there any in Kingsport? There is a city bus that goes certain
routes a few times a day and not on weekends? There is a senior citizen
rural shuttle service for residents I think.
I am sure you can get from airport to certain hotels.
I am not certain that there is a reliable way to get from any hotel to
the center.
Let me see, well, I guess there are several 9 taxi companies in
Kingsport, though several of these are actually limo and ambulance
companies, so the actual number looks to be 4 or 5. Some of these might
be single-cab companies:
http://www.goservices.com/city/Kingsport_TN.html
I suppose many people are driving down or will rent a car at the
airport. But for the others?
A big question, I think, is: Which hotels are within walking (and
instrument hauling) distance of the Renaissance Center? |

Looking at the maps, it seems to me the Quality Inn is about 3 miles walking
and a pretty straightforward route. That is a doable walk in probably around
an hour, and would cut down on taxi rides, but carrying no more than a
laptop, it wouldn't be suitable for dragging a flight case. |

There will be plenty of people with cars at the event. Your best bet is to hitch a ride with one of them staying at the same hotel.
A couple have said they're available to shuttle others. You can contact us if you know that you will need shuttle service from hotel to event. _________________ www.gregwaltzer.com |

To back what Grag is saying, thats what Robin and I did at EM 2006. I would take folks who were staying at our Hotel to and from the venue that did not have transportation.
There should be little problem getting rides. To add to this you will meet some of the most friendly people on the planet at these Electro Music conferences and are usually willing to help. I know that it left a lasting impression on me from the last two I attended

Driving from Philly to Tennessee August 14 Subject description: Anyone need a ride? |

I'm James and I'll be attending the event in Kingsport. I am one of the members of Fringe Element. I'll be driving down Thursday morning and anticipate arriving early in the afternoon. If anyone wants a ride from the Philadelphia area and would be willing to share the cost of gas, please email me at the below address. I currently have plenty of room in my vehicle for people and equipment. Hope to hear from you!

Mark, there was a really nice music gear shop in Johnson City at the end of the block from where you played last year.
I was wondering if there was anything similar in Kingsport, as a good source for little things that get left at home or break ? _________________ "Musicians are magicians.." -W. Carlos

I just wanted to pop in and say I am really excited to be attending and participating in this event. This will be my first year. Looking forward to meeting like minded individuals. Will be a new and odd experience to be around that many people into experimental music at the same time.
So much to see and hear packed into three days.
Really looking forward to the jam sessions...I will be hosting the avant-garde jam....I look forward to plugging in and mixing sounds with other artists.
Really interesting seminars going on as well. Wish this thing could go on for a week.
See everybody there!

| Still thinking of coming, the cost is a bit of a deterrent still, the trip from the UK is going to cost around $2500 to $3000, rather a lot! |

Ah, but think of all that a pound will buy at the current exchange rate! _________________ When the stream is deep

Hello to all: It's getting closer... Subject description: It's getting closer... |

Hello to all who will be hosting/attending the "EM-08".
I'm staying at the local Super-8...I realize it's not "The Ritz"...just as long as I don't carry any creepy crawly critters home in my gig bags.
Since I'm driving there from south of Nashville, I'm planning to bring a few extra cables and a couple 9 volt batteries. You never know when you will have a malfunction. This usually happens while setting up for a gig when you least expect it.
Like others have mentioned before, there will be lots of people who will be staying in the area. I don't have a problem helping people get around the local area while the event is going on. I have an SUV and it will seat 4 adults and room in the back for gear.
Just touching base with everyone and putting my 2 cents worth in. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone and jamming out. I've got a few interesting instruments I'll be bringing.
Good day to all.

For those of us coming South on I81 from VA, do drivers in the know get off of I81 after the VA/TN border and take US11 to Kingsport just after the border, or do you stay on I81 until I26 and take that north to Kingsport? I haven't driven on US11 in NE TN since early 1975, but as I recall, it may be slower than the longer I81-I26 route. _________________ When the stream is deep

It depends on what your motel is. For the most part, I would stay on I-81. For Jameson Inn, Holiday Inn Express, MeadowView, and Hampton Inn go to the I-26 exit and go toward Kingsport.
Super 8 and Best Western should get off on Exit 59 on I-81.
Comfort Inn of Kingsport (not of I-81) and Quality Inn folks might consider 11W.
Anyone with reservations for the Super 8 of Kingsport on Lynn Garden Dr. and The Westside Inn, should reconsider their choice. These aren't great neighborhoods. The Westside Inn adjoins a sleazy bar know for knife fights called The Hog Wild Saloon. 'nuf said. Super 8 of Kingsport is nearby. It is also a stone's throw from a paper plant. This Super 8 shouldn't be confused with the one on Shipley Ferry Rd.
Hope this helps. _________________ Mark Mahoney
