Update:

http://www.ethereality.info/ethereality_website/music/Lunatique%20-%20End%20of%20the%20Story,%20and%20the%20Beginning%20of%20Another(%20(mixed).mp3

This is pretty much the finished version. I'm not 100% happy with the mix, and I haven't done any mastering yet--not even sure if it even needs mastering.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Old post:

Been trying to learn Sonar 3, and it's a pretty steep learning curve, no matter what Cakewalk says about it being more user-friendly. A professional software for creative work is never easy I guess.

This track is definitely not finished--just a test clip to get the basic idea down. I'm trying to do orchestral strings and electronica with this one. Have a lot more to go. No panning or audio effects yet, only some volume automations. I haven't even programmed any drum breaks or variations yet. I still have to figure out how I'm going to arrange the more complex orchestral string harmonies and counter melodies later on in the track. I'm going to go for a full-blown lush feel, and the music theory required for that will make my head hurt. . ..

I used Sonar 3, Triton Le Workstation, and softsynths (Korg Legacy Cell, VSampler). Took me forever to figure out how export a mp3 that contains both the audio and the midi tracks. It is NOT intuitive at all. You have to export them seperately as wave files first, then import them into a seperate project file, THEN you can export them both to one mp3 file that contains both. What a pain in the royal ass.

hi! nice lush feel.
i really like the beginning, with the spectral stuff. not so crazy about the drum sounds, but you have a nice way to develop things. the faster line seems like it slows down right before the drums drop out. as far as theory making your head hurt, just use your ear for those countermelodies and harmonies. Smile the head may suggest, but the ear knows for sure.

i'm currently doing stuff which is making my head break (translating themes from notes to hertz, because i'm using things like filters and sample reducers tonally). However, i just stopped letting it break my brain, not obsessing with the things i would normally obsess about, and just started doing it by ear. now i have sections back to back, some of which i obsessed for the exact hz, and some of which were just done by ear. I can't tell the difference.

I mean, i had the calculator out and everything Laughing

nice to meet you

I'm with Astroid. Really lush and romantic, but the drums are a bit overbearing in the mix. But I could see this work with a visual cue in a film. I like the way you led up to the drums and arp lead. This promises to be a great piece when you finish it.
I use Sonar 3 and love it. Very stable and great support.

drums seem good to me..appropriate for that 'machine drum' feel...

altho the piece did seem to have a bit of a generic feel, i enjoyed the sounds/tones etc

Hahaah, my wife treats me like a king. Does that count?

Yeah, the drums were programmed before the main orchestration was realized, so now I'll probably have to go for more organic sounds.

About it sounding generic--it's kind of a funny story. I've always wanted to do orchestral electronica since about 15 years ago, but I never could afford expensive synths or samplers (I was a teenager then). So that concept was never realized. But in the recent years, everyone else started doing it, and now it's like a fad. So, now that I can afford good sounds to attempt the concept, it's already been done by others. I'm kinda unhappy about it, but what can you do?

well, in a way everything has been done before

so nothing is really new...

but i guess i was suggesting that there needs to be more
'adventure' in that track... more mystery or something..a twist ?.. some 'funk' so to speak

perhaps exposing the hidden layers of your intentions/ideas?

Sounds good to me.

welcome to our site. Glad to have you here.

Sonar is very powerful, os the learning curve is a bit steep. I use a free program called Audiacity to make mp3 files, even if the project is in Sonar. I find it easier than making mp3s in sonar and you can use different mp3 encoders too.

I updated the the track (in the original post). Learned a lot along the way. Still so much to go!

I did not catch the first version, but this one sounds very cool. I am not sure I would call this orchestral in the traditional sense but that does not matter much. Some of the early orchestral rock went in this direction anyway. A very nice start and I hope I can hear the whole finished thingie very soon.

When thinking orchestral you can possibly make life easier by thinking singular voices rather than complex chords and chord shifts at least for those string like voices. Listining to string quartet music is often far more productive than listeing to tonal orchestral symphonic works.. at least for getting those great ideas.
But.. I liked this very much.. Keep up the good work!
