Nice shots. That first one out of the hotel window looks like there was a lot if smog. Is that correct?

Thanks, Howard. Yes, I think mostly smog. I was thinking there might be some dust in there, but come to think of it, it was pretty breezy when I was hiking, but I didn't notice any dust. I did notice dust in Albuquerque in May, but not now, and it certainly isn't humidity sunny As went L.A., so went Phoenix, and now, with Las Vegas one of the fastest growing U.S. cities, so it goes as well.

I've got to get some more shots on The Strip tonight so I can pick through those. It's a great city for people watching. My last night downtown before off to my sister's in the outskirts for a few days, and then home, so I'd better get moving.

EDIT: The temperature differential between downtown and the mountains is wonderful for hiking. I did the same hike 3 years ago and the car had a thermometer. The difference between downtown and the mountains at a 45 minute drive was something like 20 degrees F (11 C). Its been running around 95F (35C) in the morning in town, and 110F (43C) in the heat of the afternoon, which puts the mountains at 75F (24C) in the morning when I started hiking. With that + a nice breeze + being in full shade for 1/2 of the uphill (sun was behind the white monolith) and in 1/2 shade the rest of the uphill (from shrubs), most of the heat was being generated by me! The sweat dries quickly, too. The lack of asphalt helps a lot, too.

Really cool photos and place there Carlo.

One thing that impressed me was there are wide open spaces in nature, and smallish towns and cities with buildings 1000 years old that people are living in. There were enormous and densely populated cities with hot and cold running water, septic systems, paved roads, sidewalks, and municipal trash pick up 2000 years ago. These same cities are still there, still lived in, and there has not been the sort of population catastrophe that Malthus would predict. Somehow everything worked out fine, it's not a concrete jungle like Blade Runner at all.

Over here, people inspired by Malthus continue to predict doom and propose radical programs to deal with the impending disaster they expect, yet driving across country there is nearly zero population density across most of the interior. One has to wonder if in the future this will all be filled in, but looking at other countries the answer seems to be no.

this area of Italy is very rainy (but we had almost 15 straight sunny days). during the summer is gorgeous but I think the winter is tough. the village where we stayed has a population of maybe 50 people. it's on top of a hill and there is nothing nearby, only chestnut and walnut trees Wink they start getting snow in November and it stays all winter....but the food is beyond belief even for an Italian like me who leaves in a medium sized city like Florence.
They grow their own vegetables, they have animals, they even make their own grappa Shocked , wines, outstanding marmalades, chesees, cookies, pies.... Fortunately I am back home because otherwise I would get fat (not that my wife is a bad cook but we try to stay on the low calories side of things).

Here is where we stayed!

So, if you enjoy these pictures I'll had a few more Wink

Man! Forget Americana style pizza- Italy is the real deal Very Happy

I've eaten the most amazing pesto in Trento, and bitten the most exquisite black squid ink risotto with cream in Venice, not to mention the endless pizza on beaches near Rome. Sicily is the place to eat (drink?) espresso ganitas with brioche! Three of those on a hot summers day, and your heart knows its been spoken to!! Shocked Cool Cool Cool
