thank you,
i just wanted to say this is not about his music.
its about an instrument which I heard play in many russian sci-fi movies (of the 80's) so please, if you can just check what the instrument is - dont listen to the whole song just the last 25 seconds of it, ok? |

OK. I deleted your duplicate post. No problem. I'm sure someone familiar with this music will chime it. I don't even have any David Bowie CDs. _________________ --Howard

song: "Ashes to Ashes"
don't know about the ablum
and there's no point listening to the whole song - because the instrument plays only during the last 25 seconds. |

| Are you talking about Mr Eno's tasty glide synth patch? Glide or Portamento can sound like a theremin sometimes. I read someone selling theremins claim that the Beach Boys 'good vibrations' featured a theremin but AFAIK this was just a moog line with lots of glide. |

I'll have to pull out my Bowie albums - I have all of the 70's albums on vinyl (so that's a bit inconvenient) - going completely on memory I'd say it's just a synth of some sort. I saw a photo of Eno's Synthi A (I think) at some point - might have been that - but I truly don't know. Oh wait - Ashes To Ashes is a bit later - on "Scary Monsters / Super Creeps" I believe (phenomenal albums, by the way...) - it might have been a later synth.
Beach Boys - Good Vibrations - I really thought that was theremin. I'm fairly certain when I saw Brian Wilson playing it just recently (within in the last year - I think it might have been the "Ellen" talk show) that he was doing that part on a theremin. Not that doing it that way now means that's how it was done way back then... |

No, I was just trying to point out that a synth with glide sounds a lot like a theremin. The line on Ashes to Ashes is to perfect to be a theremin or a tannerin, the tone is also distinctly 'detuned oscillators', my guess is a minimoog (based on the linear glide) but in 1980, could have been anything.
Eno was not involved also on this one, credits for synthesizer go to Andy Clarke. |

so basically some synthesizers can produce this sound? |

I agree with G2Ian that this could be virtually any analog lead synth. There is nothing specifically identifiable about it. _________________ --Howard

damn that double post thingy - admin im giving you some extra work hehe
and as we know synthesizers play sounds based on other instruments (even though it creates new sounds also) so is this based on some ... I don't know - like non-synthesizer instrument? (or is this sound only available by synthesizing (artificially) it? |

Yes, you have to be patient when posting messages.
Well, this particular sound is pretty much an analog synthesizer sound. It's typical of a MiniMoog. _________________ --Howard

High school student? That's great. I was one myself once. After I graduated I lived for a year in Israel. That was in 1964, a few years ago. I have relatives there. We were there for a visit in the summer of 1999. It was pretty peaceful then. Anyway, Razor, it's good to have you here... _________________ --Howard

Synths can truly be their own instrument - in fact - my favorite synth sounds don't try to be representations of acoustic instruments. You're right, though - many people long for synths that recreate other instruments since it's a royal pain to lug a real piano or Hammond organ - or 30 piece orchestra around in your car... However, once you start playing with a synth with a bunch of things you can control in real time... aftertouch, knobs, sliders, wheels or joysticks, etc... you'll start to find out how much a synth can be itself instead of something else.
I still haven't listened to the track again - but I'm sure mosc and everyone else is right - that it's just an analog synth doing what it does best. Today you can get a synth that recreates analog - there are a ton of them (a nice one is an Access Virus... or about 40 other virtual analog synths...) - or you can pick up a great software synth like Reaktor or Tassman or Reason - which can all recreate analog (and a ton of other kinds of sounds). You can pick up synths from pretty much every era on ebay or at your local music store used - the 'classic' ones can run a hefty amount, but sometimes it's more fun to get something that isn't so in demand right now. |
