"Lame" is a free mp3 encoder that you might want to look up. Lame is free and open while other encoders tend to require lisencing and thus cost money. Are there any speciffic reasons for needing it as a Winamp plugin? If you want to convert large amounts of files I think the ability to batch through a comand line or a interface made for this might be preferable.

I'd also like to encourage you to considder OGG if compatibility with Itunes/Ipod's isn't a issue since OGG does sound better at comparable file sizes.

it's for kids to use. i'm setting up computers in a school and most of them are already familiar with winamp.

thanks.

LAME's command line UI is a little awkward but it comes with a nice windows script which allows drag and drop encoding. Very easy.

Just to chime in: LAME is actually one of, if not the best mp3, encoders.

I just checked the winamp site and there are only two encoder plugins. One for OGG and the other for FLAC. I agree with Kassen about OGG. I did a lot of A/B testing and OGG does sound better at comparable bit rates. Accept for iPod, virtually everything plays it now-a-days.

Windows Media Player can encode mp3s and that is free and probably on every PC too boot.
