Thta one is quite nice. Are you using a Bialetti pot or ? This stuff has to be brewed the right way. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

I agree, not bad. Milder than much of what we get in cans labeled espresso, but it has quite a buzz. |
You need to put more in! hehe
I like the backdrop too
Personally I've recently gone back to drinking coffee out of the frenchie plunger device (with some rather posh organic stuff from Sainsbury's- cos it tastes somewhat better). I've decided to rename LIDL's coffee 'Wife Beater' -actually Stella Artois is also known as 'wife-beater' in this country too!!
Actually the LIDL stuff isn't bad at all- it's just that it's got a real kick to it
I'm also convinced that the rise in aggressive drivers in this country is due to the recent obsession with coffee for breakfast- instead of our beloved tradition of drinking tea! _________________ ACHTUNG!

A new little shop around the corner uses only lavazza (and other italian machinery). Yes, it is smooth & mild tasting, but packs a good punch.
How come nobody's mentioned their Senseo yet? From what I hear, they're very popular in europe. My sister (who's stationed in Germany) sent me one, and those pods it came with pack a serious buzz!! (My wife is an early-to-bed kind of person, but every time she's had a cup from that machine, she's been up until 12:30!!). I think I still prefer the french press over the Senseo though (especially since I still have a good supply of Hawaiian Kona) |

hm, interesting to see yet another similarity among e-musicians.
btw, nice picture, howard!
regarding the discussion on pressurized boiling water: you want the higher temperature to have a decent extraction.
french press, long contact time, water at < 100 °C, used for coffee, espresso machine: short contact time with pressurized steam, the conditions depend on what substances you want to extract.
for the real coffeine addicts: try extracting ground coffee with supercritical co2, then take a sniff...
now if someone could get me one if those tiny coffee roasting things and fresh beans, that would be something! stein
best regards

Espresso making equipment is even more addicting than electronic instruments. I dunno, perhaps Moog eventually will see the light and add a line of espresso gear? Waldorf? Anyone?
What a bout a nice outboard compressor with dials for bar? I think bass sounds better when injected together with espresso. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

How did I miss this thread! So that's what they're called - Bialetti pots? I picked one up in Italy a couple of years ago - I love that little thing.
For me, coffee is one of the really nice things about travelling abroad - it's hard to find a good cup around here. American coffee is generally so bland - oftentimes it's like boiling water stirred with a dark crayon. I like 'Lisa Douglas coffee' (reference to the old '60's series 'Green Acres' - looked like high grade crude Lisa (Eva Gabor) would pour into Eddie Albert's cup of a morning ).
I sometimes like to grind the beans meself. One of my favorite beans is Kona.
Cheers,
Scott |

Lavazza alert!
This morning I dropped off my car at the dealer for service and got a ride home from a 67 year old X truck driver who has a incessant motor-mouth. After telling me everything that is right and wrong with his company, his family and the Teamsters Union, he tells me his a big coffee fan. He has been drinking Lavazza for years. A month ago he opened a can and the "coffee" was red, not black or dark brown. The coffee wasn't coffee, but some tasteless substance. (Why he would taste it is amazing to me.)
He called the Lavazza company in New York and they said they'd send him a couple of cans for free. He said that wasn't good enough, he wanted them to identify the cause and let him know what he drank, and to assure him they are taking appropriate action to make sure that the coffee they sell is really coffee. Apparently, the company representative blew him off. This guy is now on an campaign to tell everyone about Lavazza and get them to stop buying it. I myself have not purchased any Lavazza products in the last three hours. The company's stock price hasn't crashed yet, but I suspect it will after this post is read by the electro-music coffee consumers.
He is sending the red Lavazza "coffee" to the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for analysis. We may never hear how this turns out because I can not afford to keep bringing my car in for service to get the latest updates. So, please, the next time you open a can of Lavazza, look at the coffee before brewing it. _________________ --Howard

Sounds like a home-roast kit (red beans). Or he fell for Lavazza's first foray into being a world supplier of Kidney Beans. Either way, he *drank* it??
Great story

UPDATE: The dealership called - I have a blown head gasket. Well, I know that but I was unaware my car had such a problem. Wow, big bucks. They keep the car overnight for this one. I'll get a ride from the motor-mouth tomorrow if all goes well and maybe I'll have more information. _________________ --Howard

This reminds me of the joke about the eskimo with chapped lips who is pushing his skiddoo (is it called this? Snowscooter?) to the garage. The garage owner asks "Have you blown a seal?" To which he replies "No it's lip balm". Gosh, the old ones… _________________ -- Say "&Eth;onne hit wæs hrenig weðer" |

That's interesting. We have the same joke over here only different: A penguin is visiting America for the first time and his car breaks down in a desert town. He leaves it at a garage and goes and gets an ice cream cone to cool off. He eats it on the way back to the garage but has trouble holding the cone with his flippers and manages to get the ice cream all over his face. He walks into the garage and the mechanic looks up from underneath the hood of the penguin’s car and says: "Looks like you've blown a seal." To which the penguin replies: "Oh no. That's just ice cream."
Cultural variations are so interesting.
Edit:
Better version posted--I'm terrible at telling jokes. _________________ The question is not whether they can talk or reason, but whether they can suffer. -- Jeremy Bentham |

@howard: there you go...
we bought a rancilio silvia espresso machine which we used with our zassenhaus handmill with good results. since then we purchased a rancilio rocky grinder which together with the silvia makes great espressi!
the grinder really makes a big difference.

Congrats on the new espesso machine and thanks for posting the pics.
You mention the grinder. Why is that so important. I've read that before and on the reviews of the Silvia people mention that too. I have a relatively cheap blade grinder. One has zero control over the grind - only let it run for a long time and you'll get a very fine grind; shorten the time and you get a coarse but inconsistent grind.
I understand that for espresso, you want a very fine grind, so why wouldn't a blade grinder be fine for that? It seems you'd only need a good burr grinder if you were using a method like drip which is said to be best with a medium grind. _________________ --Howard
