I know that they are very different beasts from my G2 and the sounds are bound to be different, but there are a few sounds in these soft synths that I'd love to approximate on the G2.
However, I can't even get close in most instances. I don't know whether this is due to my limitations or G2 limitations - I suspect the former.
Here's an example from Reaktor. A very easy-to-reproduce sound (output clean.mp3) processed by a sequenced delay unit (output 1-2.mp3). I can't get close to emulating that delay unit sound. It's basically a couple of step sequencer controlled delay units in series, the first one set to modulate to produce small blips in the sound which are then echoed by the second unit. There's also some modulated filtering going on to keep the underlying pad evolving.
Any tips on how to approach this sort of sound???
Thanks and sorry for the vagueness of the question.
Angus

OK, at risk of embarrasing myself in front of some talented patchers, here's a really pathetic attempt I made to get this sound.
As you can see, it has none of the atmospheric quality of the Reaktor sound. The sequenced thing is pretty poor, mainly because I seemed to run out of DSP once I started messing around with lots of delay units.
I'm sure that with a few days staring at my screen, I could make some minor improvements, but I just don't know how to get that "organic" sound that Reaktor has.
Like I say, any tips.....I clearly need them.

I wish I had the time to help you with this, but I'm swamped with prep for the electro-music 2005 thing. The mp3 doesn't sound all that different from things I've heard from some of the submitted patches here on the forum though. On second thought, even if I had the time I probably wouldn't be too good at this sort of thing. I patch to find sounds I've never heard before and then use those in my music. Anyway, good luck, Angus.

Its probably possible to get close.. as long no allpass filters are used in reaktor...
and no high resonance settings in the filters... on resonant settings the reaktor moduls get in strange states that actually can sound nice...
maybe possible to patch that...
I would like to have the old Bi-machine patch for the G2..
one of the oldest and most simple reaktor patches.
My first trys showed me that the filtersound will need a handfull of modules..

To me it sounds like the step sequencer controls the delay time. The little glitches in the audio happen when the sequencer changes the delay time. Basically each step in the sequence changes the delay time momentarily, only for say 100ms or something. Then this feeds into a low pass filter and finally into a stereo delay. I think there's some dry signal getting fed into the filter or second delay too.

I guess you would have to set up a value sequencer with a trigger control. The trigger control would open up an AHD envelope to let the delay time change for a short period of time. Then you could select which steps the glitches happen on. It sounds to me like the delay times being used for glitches are quite high too. This delay line would also need a fair bit of feedback. The lowpass filter is there to keep the delay line under control. It may or may not be patched into the feedback loop....

Sorry if you had already figured out alot of this, I had to put it all down to think it through myself. Hope it helps.

Just a few simple mods on the patch, incorporating some of the remarks made by various people above.

Think it starts to come alive a bit this way, soundwise it differs quite a bit from the mp3's, but it might give some hints for further explorations

Excellent - will play around with some of these ideas.
Thanks for the responses.

could you perhaps post or refer to the Reaktor ensemble this is supposed to emulate?

I think this comes already close to emulating the noisesynth-part of Reaktor's old bimachine... but you're right, you'd need 6/7 Nord-filters running to have all filter options available simultaneously.

It's the Kaleidon synth going through the "Unit" FX unit.
The unprocessed sound is really easy to emulate, but the fx unit is pretty difficult to get that close to.
Here's a picture (in pdf - can't work out how to make Grab save files in jpg format)

hum.. that's quite a complex fx unit Shocked
but I'm sure it could be done *in principle*, would be quite a challenge though... maybe - just maybe - I'll have a closer look if I find time tonight.

btw - do you get error messages like me when trying to download attachments? -> mosc Question
