I would have to completely redesign the string filter.

I have used a variety of General Impedance Converter circuit that I haven't seen in any textbook, only to find out that it worked - but only with a certain batch (date code) of a certain dual opamp, that I had the luck of using when I prototyped it. I had to struggle to find enough of these chips to populate all the sockets in one - my own - device; no chance to sell anything like that as a diy-project.
I know exactly what I'd have to change to get this stable; but it will be a redesign, and I need the time to do this, and it doesn't have a high priority.

I'm still trying to get used to "pipeline designing". People start to mail me about when the tau phaser boards will be ready for shipment already.
I'm going on to design and layout new things because I love it and it's my hobby. But I'll really wait and see how smoothly the first project (Tau) will go, before I decide to sell anything else.
From the design point of view, I'm really getting a taste for making pcb layouts - it's almost as fun as making the circuits themselves, so the chances are good for more pcbs in the future. String filter - why not?

JH.

5 am seems a bit exaggerated - must be a time zone thing. Laughing

I had a splendid night last night: My wife and I made a 20km bike ride to the next town and back - quite scary, pitch black in the woods, no moon to be seen - to check out a new restaurant, that was said to offer quite exotic meals. I took the Pyton, and it was quite an experience! Very Happy

So it was definitely after midnight when I was back to answering mails and forum entries, but certainly not 5 am. I normally go to bed around 3 when my health allows it; night time is the best time for my hobby!

The time zone indication is wierd on these sites, I hope you enjoyed your new restaurant. We might be eating at an Argentine restaurant about 7 km away this evening - wonderful steak!

You can set you time zone in your profile, under preferences. All times should then be adjusted to your time zone. So, when you see something was posted at 5 AM, it was your time - not necessarily the poster's.

I deal with timezones a lot. I find a little Firefox addon called FoxClocks very useful to keep track of things. http://www.stemhaus.com/firefox/foxclocks/

Thanks for all who are showing interest.

When I'm going to offer a pcb for this, I'll ask for binding orders, just as I did with the tau. But not yet.

Currently I have the prototype frequency shifter board half-populated with components. I took a break when the package of Tau boards came in ....

Hi Jurgen - I hope you are finding time for some fun these days! We tried a new Argentine restaurant on Friday evening, after the floods here, which was superb - it was like being in Buenos Aires for 2 hours!

Sound Sample from prototype PCB, and further proceeding

I've soldered all components to the prototype board of the main FS-1A PCB, and made a quick demo in connection with an old Dome Filter board (that I had originally made for the FS-2).
It's all hooked up with alligator clips, and connected to the insert path of my mixing console because I needed a microphone preamp.
I think it's a quite stupid demo, but it shows that the new board works, and I think the sound is very clean for a frequency shifter!

Unfortunately, I'll have to make a redesign of the main PCB.
I noticed that some of the LM13600s I have in the drawer don't work properly, because their gm matching is too bad for that application.
In my prototype, I've used a NE5517, and it works perfectly; but that doesn't mean every NE5517 would. So, I'm adding a gm balancing potentiometer to the new design, which will fix the problem, but which means extra investment in another prototype. Sad

I also have ideas for the second board.
I'll probably include an extra string of all pass filters, for a deeper Barberpole Phaser effect.
And maybe an aread with veroboard-like structure, for everyone to experiment with additions of his/her own. More about the 2nd board later.

I think even though I expect considerably less demand for this project than for the Tau phaser (it's a more difficult project, after all!), the price per board could be similar, so expect something around 55 ... 60 Euro for the set of 2 boards.

JH.

Oh what the hell. Can I ask for a board too?

Everybody is asking for two (Stereo?). Wendy Carlos produced fantastic results with just one, so I'll stick with one for now Very Happy

Just to clarify: You need a set of two boards for one frequency shifter: The main board, which I have just prototyped and which will undergo a redesign, plus a second board with dome filter, mic amplifier, and auxiliary stuff.

what are the dimensions of the actual pcb's? could one fit this into a modular sort of system instead of the traditional rack system that the designs look like?

160mm x 100mm

There should be a mail further up in this thread about mechanical considerations ...
